At what point in the year is it too late to lay sod in South Louisiana? We have a small area we are looking at redoing. Is it too late in the year to do this?

I had sod laid in February while dormant. Excellent idea. I never needed to water it and it started growing good roots before it ever started turning green.

This is central Alabama, although I imagine similar results for you

This publication will help. Not too late but perhaps a bit more risk from winter injury. FWIW, I have a small area that needs sodding (BR) and I plan to do it this week or next.

Fall is the best time to do it. Water in the morning, never have to cut it until spring. When the first cut comes in spring, it will be established and perfect.

I’ve been wondering this as well. House should be finished in November/early December and will have to put sod down per HOA.

Still 2 growing months left. It has time to root before the first big fronts get here.

This right here. I’ve laid sod year round for years. Don’t have to water as much when it’s cold.

How much do you need to water it in dormancy? The link Craw posted didn’t mention it either, just less water.

I’m considering getting some sod over the winter timeframe, and I’ve read that’s it fine and in some cases preferred. But I’m not sure how the watering schedule should look vs typical actively growing.

You want to keep new sod moist but not wet. Basically, water 1/2" once a week, if it doesn't rain, Put a tin can in the yard when you water and time how long it takes to fill to 1/2". After 5 days , stick you finger in the soil under a square and it should still be moist. If not, water 1/2" . Its trial and error. If you know you are going to have a hard freeze......below 25, water about 1/4" that day. A freeze dehydrates roots.
