Probably right. The most useful is something like cgrand where you can open the lid and leave it open while cooking or cleaning. Though if it didn't have a lid that would be even better as far as pure ease of use. But having just a can in the open with no lid is uncouth even for me.

The look of a garbage drawer half open 24/7 isn't great either and I think most people do this. I can't leave mine open even if I wanted because it gets in the way.

A good hybrid may be something like the commercial trash can flappers you see in fast food restaurants. Something you could integrate into the cabinet door but also just open the drawer if need to throw something big away.

I see they sell something like what I'm thinking on Amazon:

eta; they also have a countertop chute thats interesting.:

we have that '2 trash bin' system in the drawer and i'm still not sure the point. the front bin gets 99% of the trash and the one in the back gets the 'overflow' but more often than not, when i take the bag out of the front one, i reach in and grab anything that is in the one in the back and add that to the other one so i dont have to change it too

interesting. You should post a picture of your trash area (trash included) so I can get a better idea of whats going on.

In counter trash compacter. I would not have a space for trash can unless it was very slim and could fit behind French doors with my washer and dryer.

Get yourself a Cherry Pitter. Best father's day gift I've ever received.

Ours is in the kitchen at the end of the cabinet but while food prepping we throw everything into a big bowl for the chickens.

Sounds like you need chickens.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart. We had a stainless one at the end of the island until my kid started walking and would not stay away from it. So we had to move to in the island and the drawer in the island "designed" for a trash can is too short to fit any standard trash can. Too small to fit 2 cans and too big to fit one. It's incredibly annoying. Maybe I should go the route of building something heavy out of wood and painting it white to match the cabinets and putting a latch to keep the offspring out of it.

I don't find opening and closing the drawer to be anything I've ever even thought about. I certainly don't want a garbage can as part of my kitchen decor, so in the drawer it goes. Bag gets taken out every night.

An open kitchen trash can would make me (literally) insane.

but do you open and close the drawer for every piece of trash or does the drawer get left open a few inches most of the time?

Moved 5 years ago. House has drawer for trash. The capacity is tiny. So, we just leave it out in the open at the end of the island. We don't mind being a little trashy.

No shame there. Imo, it neither looks better or worse than a drawer that stays open 90% time.

you keep saying this but it doesn’t make any sense. Why do you need your trash can to constantly be open? I open it when i need to toss something then close it LOL. more than half my kitchen refuse goes in the compost pile anyway

I will admit that most of the time I just book a plastic grocery bag over a drawer pull and fill that up but I’m trashy like that

Because a lot of my friends and family that have trash drawers leave theirs open most of the time? Including myself.

same here. my only gripe is the hardwood is starting to look rough around the can. I need to put some sort of padding under it.
