Insurance is paying for a new roof due to hail storm.

I've chosen my roofer, who's been in business fur 20+ years. We're looking for a good quality architectural shingle. What mfrs should I be looking at? Owens Corning, GAF, CertainTeed etc. I've read that once I choose, I should make sure to get the whole "system ". Any advice is greatly appreciated. I'm in DFW if that matters

I just put on the CertainTeed Landmark Pro, Max Definition in Weathered Wood. Great looking roof, live in the Baton Rouge area, had a bad Hailstorm in June 2023.

All mentioned are good. To add to your list: Malarky and Atlas. I would suggest considering a high (4) impact rated shingle. Some insurance companies offer discounts for impact resistance. The IBHS tests and rates shingles each year from different manufacturers. Might be something to look into. [link=(rating )]https://ibhs.org/hail/shingle-performance-ratings/[/link]

Shingles are like trucks. Everyone thinks they have the best but most of the big manufacturers make quality shingles with solid warranties - GAF, Owens, Tamko, Certaineed.

Some guys say tundras are better, some dudes think F150s are the best, some guys love Chevy, a few idiots like GM. But they all pretty much get the job done.

But make no mistake- Mother Nature is undefeated and she'll rip all of them off of your roof at a moments notice snd not give a frick about brand name.

To me the smartest thing you can do is get a fortified certification on your roof. Typically this involves seam tape on the osb, an extra layer of under layment and a third party inspector. There are grants in the state for this, this will lower your insurance rate and Frankly if a hammer of s storm comes through/ everyone is gonna lose their shingles. Everyone.

But that Seam tape can keep your house dry which so so so important

Atlas. Get the kind that don’t allow stains and mildew discoloration.

Solo - you know any info regarding the grant for the fortified roof for new construction? I've seen so many grants for things like this or for improving energy efficiency, but the majority of them are for existing home renovations only. Appreciate any info that you might have.

Get the scotch guard ones from Atlas Pinnacle because your roof wont get full of algae. I moved out of a house I put that roof on 8 years ago and when passing it even today it looks brand new on the north side. I replaced the roof on the house I’m in now a few years ago and did the same thing. It still looks brand new.

Just had owens driftwood put on..
The have wind good wind tolerance and if installed by a gold ( I think they call it that) roofer they bump up the warranty little.

All of the ones mentioned are good .. the most important thing is to get someone you know is darn good at putting them on and will be around thirty years from now to honor any issues.

They're not offering it for New Construction man, I had a class on it a couple of weeks ago and they said the majority of the grants will be given to lower income families as well, I think the new round for applying was opened last week.

I said it then- it's bullshite that the state isn't offering tax incentives on it for new builds.

If everyone builds a fortified roof it will help tremendously. Homes will get much less water damage, most sheathing won't have to be replaced so major storms won't cost insurance companies nearly as much. That should attract more insurance companies back, and the competition will naturally breed lower prices. Especially after s few years of them not getting hammered.

I'm assuming that would help our state insurance fund as well but I'm not versed at all in how that's funded and distributed.

I'm suppose to be at event with Senator Kennedy next month and I'm going to bring it up to him. It's such an easy way to help everyone. Just offer a 5k tax incentive and people will do it left snd right.

Everyone wins, suppliers, contractors, owners, insurance companies and tax payers.

I'm a GC and do roofing more than anything. Install them every day. The only two shingles I'd put on my roof are Malarkey or Atlas. They both are both incredible shingles with actual good research and development put into their shingles. Even Malarkey's basic architectural shingle is now class 3 impact resistant.

The two you couldn't pay me to put on my roof are CertainTeed and Tamco. I'm in North LA and while I'd like to support local (even though they don't ship direct from here), CertainTeed is just a crap shingle. Little to know R&D put into their products. You can just hold a CT and Tamco and tell the difference when holding a Malarkey or Atlas. Malarkey and Atlas also take care of their customers very well if there is ever a manufacturers default.

Make sure your contractor is using synthetic felt as well instead of old tar paper. That's actually one of the biggest factors on cooling your roof, not shingle color like most people think. And make sure they are installing drip edge as well. If your contractor isn't putting drip edge on he is cutting corners and most likely not even pulling a permit. Get him to replace the flashing/color/cap on your gas vents as well. If it's insurance even if they didn't originally replace them that is an item that can be supplemented. You don't want reused gas vents, that is a leak waiting to happen.

Atlas Pinnacle is a class 3
Atlas StormMaster is a class 4 and a beast of a shingle
OC Duration is a Class 3
OC Duration Storm is a class 4 also a beast of a shingle

Those are the best shingles IMO, and you'll be happy with any of those... Atlas gets the edge for me with the anti algae tech

GAF isnt bad, but a step down... and CertainTeed is meh

Stay away from IKO and Tamko

Yes, get the starter shingles and capping that pair with the manufacturer. And for the love of everything that is holy, do not let them put on those black rubber pipe boots.. those things will rot in 7-10 years from UV damage and allow water to leak in your home (ask for bullet boot pipe jacks, they are UV resistant)... also change out the flashing on any metal vents so the whole roof is good to go for the life of the shingles

Rut row... I built in 2022 and have Black arch Tamko shingles....

I have found through the years GAF are pretty consistent in quality. I don't like Owens Corning Much. I would never put Atlas Pinnacles on my roof. They had serious quality control issues 20 years ago. The granules would flake off if even marble size hail hit them.
