What kind of grass would you put down in the Baton Rouge area?

What makes it better than the other options?

Centipede is low maintenance and more drought resistant. As well as cheaper.

Pros and Cons to each. If you choose centipede, Baton Rouge area, have a soil test conducted by the LSU AgCenter. Centipede requires more acidic soils than the other grasses, and Baton Rouge area soils are not generally acidic. If the soil needs elemental sulfur to lower soil pH it’s best to soil incorporate it before the sod is laid down.
I have centipede in my front yard, St Aug in my back, still not sure what I like best. Had two neighbors remove their centipede lawns and replace it with St Augustine, not because of any significant issue with centipede but rather they liked the darker green color of St Aug, and I suppose they like to cut grass more frequently.

Well maintained Zyosia is imo the best feeling and looking residential grass. It’s a pita though to cut. St Aug is the best as far as easiest to maintain for a good look imo, but it’s also what needs to be longest.

Zoysia Palisades is what I laid after centipede let me down for about the 10th year in a row. So happy I got rid of Centipede - palisades is the bomb. Thick, crowds out weeds, doesn’t grow super fast. It’s awesome

Depends on the amount of sun light your lawn will get.

I have Palisades Zoysia as well. It’s very thick and chokes out weeds very well. It’s not too bad on growth at all.
If you can sod the whole area, it’s great. I’m trying to figure out how to expand my P. Zoysia coverage this spring/summer without breaking the bank (can’t seed it).

Replaced my sod last year and chose st aug, my neighbor did his at the same time and put down centipede again and I think mine looks better. As others have said though it depends on the conditions of your yard and lot, I have a lot of shade and a slope so the st aug seems to handle the conditions better

I’m in zone 7A and have Zeon Zoysia. IMO it’s the best grass you can buy. Thick, carpet like with thin soft blades. It’s nickname is “Barefoot Grass”

I have a spot under a tree where I once had centipede grass but now that the tree has grown very large after 20 years gets no sun and I barely have any grass. What kind of sod can I put down that will flourish under this tree and still look good with the existing centipede in the rest of my front yard?

Is your not expanding into other parts of the yard? I was going to put a several squares throughout my yard and was hoping over the next couple years it would completely overtake my yard.
I will be using a fertilizing program for the zoysia

Centipede has been a great choice for me. I don't have full sun and I don't have good soil. Since I had over an acre of yard I just checkerboarded the sod and it grew together in 1 season from 1/2 acre of sod.

I wiped my centipede out and put down palisades zoysia last year. It’s so much better than centipede but it does spread slowly. Once it spreads it completely chokes out everything else.

Is it pretty shade tolerant?

Not quite as much as St Augustine but better than Bermuda and Centipede.

Most lawn grasses don't do well in the shade.
