Go on eBay and buy the unit yourself. Then negotiate for the installation with someone locally.
Same units.

I had a guy quote $10k many years ago for 5-ton, then I found one that would do it for 8k, and suddenly the first guy’s price dropped to $8k. There’s a lot of wiggle room so get enough quotes to not be screwed.

Specifics probably matter. What exactly are they proposing in terms of systems.

These seem like crazy numbers to me. I paid $3500 for a 2.5 ton unit 2-3 years ago, installed.

It was family in the business, but not “close family”. Guy is the brother of my brother’s wife… my SIL’s brother.

Sounds like he really gave me a great deal, but surely you can do much better.

Is Daikin alot more expensive than Rheem? Did they replace everything?

Don't know anything about daikin, but no, they just replaced the unit and thermostat. Not everything.

That’s not even in the ballpark. They’re ripping you off. The unit costs about $1800 just for the condenser. If you need the coil and furnace you’re looking at about $3,300.

You aren't buying a unit with variable speed and heat pump for that cheap.

I have a national wholesale account with Goodman which is lower tier and you aren't buying an inside and outside unit anymore for $3300. It is around $4300 now before tax and that is no whip, plenum, or anything.

The OP can go your route and get cheap equipment and then pay for it monthly, or he can get get a high-efficiency variable-speed heat pump unit that will cut his energy bill quite a bit. Around $10K installed is the market rate for that.

An A/C installer has about $5500 in the unit and materials (plenum, whip, fittings, pans, etc) and they are paying taxes, labor, insurance, and have a warranty on their work. You act like they are clearing $5K on the job. Take all of that out and it is probably closer to $2K

Plus a lot of manufacturers will not warranty the equipment unless a licensed tech is installing it. None of that is counted in your $1200 Mexican you have slamming units into flips.

That one dude that said he is buying units for $3300 and getting crackheads to install them for $1200 isn't getting this nice of a unit and all of this completed with his flip houses.

SEER ratings increased in 2023 making the price of units go up drastically so anything done before then isn't really comparable.

Yeah I just paid over 15k for my ac/furnace replacement as part of our total remodel. 16 seer unit. I also had it relocated to the attic and duct work done and 2 return vents installed.

I'm currently on Week 4 of living in my 5th wheel while the whole house is being reworked.

ETA--maybe close to 17k all said and done. It's a 2 stage 16 seer. I can't remember the tonnage off hand.

I am in CT and replaced two AC units and air handlers last year. Each were $7500. I think they were either 2 or 2.5 tons

Ok. I didn’t pay enough attention to that part. Most of the 2 stories around us have duel unit systems not duel zone systems.

Just the unit, or are they doing new duct work, too?

This seems like what I paid for a 4 ton last year, but they litteraly just installed the new unit
