Morning everyone! I have a weed in my back yard that is spreading like wildfire. I’ve had it before but I’ve controlled it by just pulling it up when I see it. This year, I can’t keep it from spreading like crazy. What is this stuff and is there any thing I can use to kill it?

Thanks in advance.

My guess is Virginia Buttonweed.

Virginia Buttonweed.

Celsius, MSM Turf, or Fertilome Weed Free Zone (at less than 85 F). Add surfactant (spread-sticker) to herbicide solutions.

It’s a perennial weed that is difficult to control, multiple applications of herbicide over multiple years. Treat when it first emerges, before maturity (flowers). Look for it in late April & May. Patience & persistence.

Thanks for this. Being that it is mature and temps are over 85 for at least the next month or so, it sounds like I am not going to have much effect on it this year.

Do I spot treat once below 85 or spray the whole lawn? How often should I apply herbicide?

You can use Celsius & MSM Turf in this heat - both are very good-excellent herbicides, MSM Turf being cheaper of the two. And they can be used on the 4 warm season turf grasses. I think Celsius has a broader spectrum of weed control for those weeds we find in this this area, for example Doveweed. In either case, a small bottle of each will last several years for a normal size yard. The 2,4 D present in the WFZ can damage turf at high temperatures.

I would spot treat the VBW now, re-apply in 3 weeks. All 3 herbicides are very good, I use all three depending on the weed & time of year. Your choice in what you might want to start out with. Maybe start with MSM Turf - 1/8 teaspoon in a gallon of water + surfactant. A 2 oz bottle is $25? but again that bottle will likely last 3 or 4 years.

Welcome to the Home & Garden Board!
Congrats on having the single most vicious grass killing weed in the Southern United States.
Please take Craw’s advice or you won’t have any lawn left in two years.

I personally haven’t - I think others have - ronk could better answer that question.

I've tanked mixed it at a 2G rate. I will say that your backpack rate will be more effective due to higher concentrations of herbicide.

I did this a week ago in a 4-gallon backpack sprayer with no issues.

Nuke it then re-sod with Zoysia grass. I used to have large patches of VBW and Doveweed as well as other various weeds. A few winters ago I went to my local sod company to get some advise and they sold me some pre emergent. While there I noticed some remnant pieces of Zoysia in the parking lot that were left over from a job they had recently done. They were not in the best condition so I asked for them and they gave them to me. There were about twenty five pieces. Got home and prepared the ground where the weeds were the worst from the summer and laid down the Zoysia. It was like January or early February so watering efforts were not as critical as in the hot months but still neccessary. Anyway, its been about five years and the Zoysia has spread to maybe 60% of my yard. It is so thick that weeds cannot and do not grow. Keep in mind that this is in full sun all day. I don't know if the results would have been the same if there would have been shade involved. Anyway, I'm a big fan and truly amazed that weeds cannot penetrate this stuff! Also, as many of you know, it makes for a beautiful turf and builds up this really nice tall wall of grass along the edges. I will try and post pics if I can figure out how to.

One of the better things about Zoysia, and Bermuda for the matter, is that when you do get weeds the type of herbicides you can use on them almost doubles. They also hold up well to the more stronger herbicides out there. NOT all herbicides but most.

I am in the same boat. I am a novice and this Virginia button weed is in my yard as well. It’s been irritating me. I’ve been pulling mats of it up.

Found the MSM turf last night and it should be arriving any minute. Appreciate the advice in the thread

It’ll die in the winter, but pulling it by hand is a great option.

This is what no one wants to hear:
Possibly the best general weed prevention is to cut your grass frequently at the desired height starting in March, if not February.
Not. Too. Short!

I am going to get the MSM turf today to apply of the VBW. Will the MSM help with this weed as well?

That is lespedeza - the MSM should-hopefully control it as well, but some state they have some trouble with it as well and tank mix Celsius + MSM Turf to help better control it. Personally, I’ve good success killing it with MSM. In fact, I have some in the lawn I’ll be spraying today as well. Again, remember it might require a follow up spray in a few weeks.

One thing I failed to mention in the earlier posts, these are systemic herbicides and take a while to show results. It may be a week + before you start seeing results.
