Over the last month or two, Ive noticed that my eyes are always burning, skin is itchy, sinus is drippy, and my dog is scratching (not fleas) constantly. This only happens in my house.

Ive never had this happen before. Ive got some pretty good air purifiers with HEPA filters and just changed out my AC filter to HEPA. Figured it was a decent way to start addressing this. I just bought a "VOCs, Active Mold, & Formaldehyde Tests - Indoor Air Quality by Home Air Check" kit from Amazon (pricey!) to see f I have mold or something else going on.

Anyone ever deal with this? Could this be some type of mite or pet dander that is worse now than before? Mold? What things should I be doing? Its at the point that I dont want to be around my house.

UPDATE - turns out I have a leak in my slab. All of my wood floors starting showing signs of rotting. Hardly noticed it under the rugs. I put a moisture meter on spots all over the house and theres moisture everywhere. Great

I'd start with changing air filters and cleaning rugs / where ever you sit mostly.

Most likely answer is mold.

How old is the house?

Was it damaged during Katrina and had to be gutted and walls and ceilings replaced? If so, some of your symptoms sound like what I heard from many people who had "Chinese Sheetrock" used in their renovations.

Could be a mold issue and that's what I'd have checked out first since it seems you've been in the house for a while and this is a recent occurrence.

I just threw out the biggest rug in the house. I’ll try and clean my recliner and couch.

I didn’t have any flood damage but I’ve had some water intrusion from above that was repaired. It’s odd that it just started.

For mold, is a DIY home test a decent place to start or do I need to get a contractor in? I’m a little nervous about getting bamboozled

I don't think you will get much from a DIY mold test. There aren't any set federal standards to compare your levels to.

Do you smell a musty or moldy odor? I assume you don't see any growth. Focus efforts where you smell or see mold. If not focus effort where you had the water intrusion. And be sure that there isn't any water getting in currently.

It could be behind the wall. I took down the paneling over my fireplace after it had gotten some water intrusion and it was full of mold in the insulation.

The other thing to think about is if you introduced anything new into the house in that timeframe that you could be allergic to.

Any pets? Fwiw within about 5 mins of being around a cat this happens to me and continues until about 10 mins of being away from it. My parents had a cat and anytime I went to their house that occurred.

That doesn’t sound like mold issues to me but I’m no expect. Mold is more of a lung thing then eye thing I think?

cCn't help with the dog scratching, but chronic in home allergies often come from dust mites.
--throw away all pillows & buy new ones. Get the zip off pillow covers that fit beneath a pillow case & make sure you wash & change all bedding once a week. Wash bedding in hot water.
--throw away mattress pad & get a new one. Wash it often.
--consider a box spring cover, if you don't already have one. Make sure you vaccuum well beneath the bed regularly.
--if you have a comforter (down or otherwise) that cannot be washed/dried often, consider swapping out for a blanket & bedspread that can be washed at least monthly.
--if your bedroom has heavy drapes or slatted blinds or shutters, consider swapping for drapes that can be washed and/or cleaning blinds weekly.

If you think about it, you spend quite a few hours with your face in direct contact with your bedding. In home allergies often stem from what's going on in your bedroom. If dog goes outside & then sleeps in your room (or on your bed), consider that it is potentially bringing in outdoor allergens to your bedroom. Maybe give Rover an evening wipedown with petsafe wipes?

Upgrade your vaccuum cleaner to a bagged version with HEPA filtration (I like the Miele, esp the cat/dog version).

I have a dog that I’ve had for 10 years. She’s been itching like crazy lately but doesn’t have fleas. I’ve had a cat for 4 years. If there’s an allergy it’s new. I did change out the filter in my roomba recently. Maybe it’s not a great filter and just drives around throwing their dander up in the air

Yeah no idea. One of them sleeping closer to you?

That’s exactly what happens to me though and it’s crazy fast. Red itchy eyes and runny nose almost instantly. My parents old cat if it was in their bedroom sleeping and I just stayed in the kitchen or whatever they it wouldn’t bother me. But it liked to lay on a blanket on top of the couch, if I sat on that couch instantly it would hit me.

Have you tried taking an allergy medication at home? See if that takes it away? That would at least help to possibly eliminate things?

Roomba is fine for floors, but if you've got indoor pets, you need to be vacuuming any upholstered furniture weekly. Get a canister vac (not an upright) with a specific upholstery attachment. It's not so much the pet hair and dander, but all of the wee beasties that feed on dander (yours and pets).

This morning i woke up and my eyes were fine. As soon as i walked into the den and sat in my recliner, my eyes started burning like crazy. Ill try an allergy med. Good idea!

I just bought a can of something called Bedlam Plus thats supposed to get rid of dust mites. Im going to spray the furniture and my mattresses and see if it helps. I am really leaning towards it being dust mite related and not mold after reading everyones responses

Mold. Pull down and clean all of your AC vents in each room. Clean the Intake Vents where you put your filters. Could be in the ducts

My son had allergies with hoarse voice all time. I did all the recommendations listed on several
Of post with addition of removing stuffed animals/toys from room where slept and washing walls to remove dust. Also covered all pillows and mattresses with plastic coverings. Was allergic to mold, dust, bed bugs, oak trees. My grand daughter had red eyes, itching and allergy symptoms when visiting. Think it was oak trees and mold outside.

I got a home mold, VOC, and formaldehyde test kit. The results were no mold, moderate VOC alcohol, and moderate formaldehyde.

I’m not really sure what to make of that or how to find the source. They gave some suggestions but they are broad. I work in a plant and have access to VOC meters but I’m not sure if they’ll pick up parts per billion levels.

Anyone ever had an issue like this?

its happening again! Dog is scratching like crazy. My eyes are watery, sore throat, coughing, and sneezing. It went away for about 9-10 months but is back. I really have no idea what it is.

Where do you live if you don’t mind me asking?

I’ve heard of people in the drought affected parts of Texas having their slabs crack.
