Cullman area
Surprisingly interesting little country-meets-city town, right in the middle of BHM/HSV/Smith Lake/Alabama Mountains.

Although be aware that I-65 through Cullman County is a wreck-filled monster.

Family enjoys shopping for new furniture, home goods, etc whenever we get where we're going because the new house never ends up looking like the old house.

Right now might not be a good time to employ that process.
Trying to furnish a house right now is not a 2-3 week process.

House we moved into was bigger and we needed some new stuff and I was surprised most of the local furniture stores had a large inventory of stuff. Everything online is def back ordered for several months though

Yep. We ordered a sectional on 4/14/21 and the latest update we heard was expect to pick up end of march but it's continuously being pushed back.

Wow, that sounds like it was a major job but also that’s a major expense. Was this a moving company that would come in and individually wrap each fork and all of that? Or was this purely just to load things in the truck and inclusive of the drive time/mileage etc.?

Moved to NC a few years ago. Just myself, wife, and dog though. No kids.

Same. Moved to NC from BR, me wife and 2 pups. Wife visited family in NC about a month before the move to see the house we were going to buy. She drove there and flew back to leave her vehicle there.

Moving time came and she drove my vehicle with the pups. We loaded up a 26' Penske with everything (washer/dryer, bed, living room furniture, bedroom furniture, etc) and I drove that from BR to NC. totaled up to about a 16 hour drive. Had a lot of stops with the dogs and a 26' Penske doesn't move very fast when it is loaded down.

Loaded the truck one day with a couple of helpers, drove the entire next day, closed on the house the following morning and unloaded the truck right after we closed with a couple of helpers. That was a long 3 days.

Moving is expensive, I thought it was going to be 30. No we did not pay for any packing, did that all ourselves.

Used 2 men and a truck, highly recommend in the Baton Rouge area. The guys that actually moved us were extremely nice, respectful and worked their tails off to get it done as quickly as possible.

Another tip is get them snacks and drinks and pick up lunch and dinner for them. Saves a ton of time on them having to go get it themselves.

what I've done with my moves is getting rid of junk that just accumulates over time, rather than moving it with you and dealing with it later.

I'm not a hoarder, my rule is if I haven't used/thought about something in 3 months, it gets trashed or sold. That effectively got rid of about 2/3rds of my belongings.

ETA: My move from rural Alaska to Mississippi will cost about 10K, but only around 2-4K lbs worth of stuff is moving.

My son was so worried that the movers would mix up his Batmans and his Ben-10s Gotta love kids' perspectives.

I cant imagine furnishing an entire house would ever be a 2-3 week process.

if you are going to do it, start now. We used paper goods the last week or so. I thought this was silly but the wife labeled the boxes so you would know what room to put in. She even put the weight of each box (she is OCD).This will help if you have family helping you load and unload. Once everything is boxed you should be able to tell what size truck you will need ( go bigger than you think). Good luck

Bham is a decent place. Pretty big culture shock from New Orleans.

They love college football and generally hate lsu except for some auburn fans that take the approach that the enemy of my enemy is my friend .

I work remotely now so nothing forcing me to stay in Nola (born and raised).

I’ve fallen way out of love with this place.

Did have a short 3 yr stint in Bham for work 15 years ago and loved it.

If your new house is not move-in ready when you arrive, like if you have some flooring, painting, etc, to finish, PODS is an option.

We used them to move a relative, and it went well. They hooked us up with a company to load the pod, then a truck hauled it to the new town and stored the pod until we called and said we were ready for it. They delivered the pod, and we hired guys to unload.

That avoids unloading a truck into a storage facility at the new town, then reloading when ready.

The anxiety from moving has to be minimal compared to the anxiety from being car jacked and shot at on a daily basis. I’m completely jealous and when my kids get out of high school my arse is gone. Wife can stay if she wants.

It's been almost 15 years but I did U-Pack and was happy with it. Family helped load the truck and I hired movers to unload. Not sure what this experience is like these days with trucker shortages though.

My biggest tip when moving is when packing boxes, keep a list of what goes in each box and the room. I always put this info in an Excel spreadsheet so if I needed something specific, I could search and know exactly which box it was in. Number the boxes starting with 1 and put it all on sides of the box in the same spot along with the room it goes in. The numbers can jump around with the rooms, just number the boxes as you pack them. This allows you to check off boxes to see if any are missing quickly (like before the movers leave). It also keeps the contents private, less likely to go missing than if something valuable is listed on the box. It also helps in unpacking because generally you pack the most important stuff last so you know to unpack the higher number boxes first.

I've moved four times using this method and movers ALWAYS comment that it was one of their easier moves and they usually finish way before they say they will. I have never lost or broken anything either.

Duck has a label scanning moving box system that does this too. *Edit* Adding link to this item: Duck Pack and Track

Those of you that packed it all up and went to NC or Bham, what was your “that’s it” factor about leaving LA and choosing there? Did you have worked lined up prior? We have 3 kids (one with special needs) and the Baton Rouge school system is clearly lacking especially for the one with special needs. Would be open to leaving but would want some work lined up. Grandparents are another thing that my wife and kids would be hard to part with. In laws are always taking the kids places.
