That's a fact. I had centipede at my last house and it was awful. It was probably laid over bad dirt, but I topdressed multiple times, fertilized and had a good weed control program, etc., and it never did well. Almost always looked bad and didn't recover at all from foot traffic or dog abuse.
I've got palisades zoysia at my new house. I do 2 granular premergent applications a year, 2-3 fertilizer applications, and spot spray for weeds maybe 1-2 times a year if necessary, spray fungicide in spring if needed, and it always looks good and recovers quickly. I pay a guy to cut once a week during growing season.
I have half an acre of zoysia at this current house compared to maybe 7000sqft of centipede at my last house. I probably spend 25% of the time fooling with the zoysia.

Just got my first patch of palisades zoysia for one area on side of my house about a month ago. Loving it already.
If this area of centipede doesn’t recover, zoysia here I come

I’m convinced that if a grass isn’t aggressive then it’s not worth installing. This helps tremendously with recovery and repair.
Centipede is the ultimate beta grass and it needs to be babied accordingly.

Centipede is easy, but it just doesn’t look great.
It’s never marketed as a quality turf. Its only advantage is cost and ease of care. You can cut it once every 2 weeks and it’ll be fine. No need to fertilize.
But it’ll never look “great”.
Our weather in LA is also still a little odd for our lawns. Not really warm enough for rapid growth, but still warm enough for green up.

Please do. I'm considering sodding my yard this year. What type of grass do you recommend. My yard is primarily full sun, good drainage, in Baton Rouge. What type of grass would you recommend?

This is why I’m embracing my torpedo grass invasion lol.

Checkout the board as of late. Everyone is letting their common Bermuda take over because nothing else is as sturdy.
I’m thinking based on his posts this year that Ronk is fed up with St. Augustine. It’s a bitch to maintain.
That being said, look into sodding Tifway 419

88 said it. I do not like St Aug. it’s nothing to do with color, growth, look, feel, etc. It is a disease prone grass. If you want to manage it I can tell you how but it’s costly.
Full sun, any on of the hybrid Bermuda’s. Tif, celebration, latitude 36. Seeded Bermuda is also great but it takes a little more effort in the beginning.
Shade, zoysia. Palisades and Jamur are two excellent varieties

Ronk, the zoysia has issues with full sun? I have 1/3 shade, 2/3 full sun

I am about done with my centipede lawn. Has anyone had success seeding in a different grass and letting it overtake centipede, is that even possible? I don't have the desire to go through another scalp, sod laying fiasco and expense. My dumb arse went with centipede last go round...

If you have any Bermuda mixed in and if you have full sun, read this thread.
The Bermuda will take over free of charge outside of fertilizer and sweat equity.

It depends on the variety. Some love full sun, some do very well in shade, etc
