St Augustine - what plugs are best?

Make them from existing grass areas of the lawn with a plug tool or make them from sod with a knife (cut in quarters I guess)?
Or no difference in performance?

Proplugger. You will get more of the root and a taller piece of the soil with it. Much healthier and robust than sod.

I’d go the sod route. I remember some discussions on this board a while back about how St Augustine is difficult to get viable plugs due to the way it grows and spreads. I could be remembering wrong, though.

The Proplugger is not recommended for St. Aug but I’ve used it with good results.

I just bought a 2nd proplugger I got from a guy who used it on St Aug. I have Bermuda but it seems to work well and should be more robust than sod in this heat. Would maybe consider sod when it cools off a bit.

Came here to say this. I had about a 50% plug survival rate when I was plugging St Aug. It takes a long time to spread and cover, though. Had to put plugs a lot closer than when I was plugging bermuda.

Thanks for all the responses and advice.
Gonna go with sod cut into quarters or halves but wait till this spring.
I’m cutting my lawn at 4 inches now so hopefully that will choke out some centipede that’s present in some spots and weeds before then.

do you recommend the 2" or 4" plate?

I use the deepest. Just have much more root structure and hold moisture better.

I’ve used the pro plugger and another brand that is square. Had limited success plugging zoysia with both. The pro plugger works better, but the plugs are too small. I finally bought a golf hole cutter and it works great.
Don’t use either plate on the pro plugger (max depth)

Same. I'd guestimate a 75% success rate? Maybe higher if I water....
