Sodding a 500sq ft plot with emerald zoysia: what’s your estimate?

Just curious what you would pay for this kind of job. The ground needs to be tilled and cleaned up a bit after small trees and shrubs were removed.
Local company is quoting $3200. I think that’s absurd but before I look for additional quotes, I thought I’d start here.

I had 1500 SQ ft installed 2 years ago which included removing the old sod, leveling, compacting and installation for $3500.

I would do the work myself and lay 1 pallet (450 sf) and space it to cover 500SF. Delivery fee will probably apply. Add in chemicals, equipment, and soil amendments and the material cost would be around $700 to $1,000.
If you hire it out, you’re going to pay an extremely high SF price for that small of an area. Sucks when the unit cost of grass is on par with wood or tile flooring, but it is what it is.

What does “ground needs to be tilled up” look like over 500 sqft?
A pallet of Zoysia covers 450 sqft and cost under $300.
You can get dirt/sand delivered from a nursery for <$250.
You can rent any walk behind tiller for a weekend for <$300.
This is a small job premium 100%, but it’s small enough to easily handle yourself or just about any young male to help out (son, nephew, neighbor, etc).

You’re in Birmingham right?
Contact Hamilton at BLAM. Very reasonable guy, fair pricing, can fit small jobs in.

I just had 2 pallets of zenith zoysia laid in my yard. They power raked the area first to get the old stuff up and get a nice base. It was $1200, but I got a $200 discount since I’ve used him for several projects recently. His rate was $300 for each pallet and $300 to install each.

I'm not sure. It's just a bunch of dirt with debris from them cutting the trees and shrubs. I could probably rake it smooth, but I wouldn't want to screw up the sod if I didn't know what I was supposed to be looking for.
He also wanted to plant 15 hydrangeas for $1300.

If there are deer in your neighborhood, don’t plant hydrangeas unless you’re willing to do some type of landscape fencing.

I killed the grass and spot leveled after dark for a few consecutive nights so it would look 'good enough'.
You can always add more sand for leveling in a year or two.

Just bumped my sod thread if you want to put eyes on it.

Agreed. The hardest part about sod is keeping it watered. Laying it down is easy. I wouldn’t ever pay that sort of premium for basically a days work, particularly when you will be the reason if succeeds or fails.
