Safest Toilet Paper for Septic Systems
Posted by WB Davis

Our septic contractor always preaches about using only Angel Soft toilet paper - along with dryer sheets instead of liquid fabric softener.
Today I talked with a home inspector who said the same thing. He told me about a test with cold water in a Mason jar that seems to prove this.
Angel Soft appears to break down into fine particles in water, while others stay intact.
The guy also claimed (weirdly) that Angel Soft Mega Rolls test better than the regular rolls, possibly because they're manufactured differently.
One of the Mason jar tests published online is here.
Has anyone else heard this?

Interesting. Haven’t heard of this before, but it makes sense.
How long was the test done for and was there any aeration or anything else to help further break each down?

Bidet + pack of Microfiber towels will seriously cut down on TP usage.

Bidet
It still gets lots of use.

Just before the shortages, we put in a slightly more expensive (~$300) bidet with power (heated seat, heated water, light, fan).
I’ll never go back and can’t recommend it enough.

With a bidet, toilet paper is used to dry off so it can go in the trash can. Use whatever brand you like.

Been in our house 18 years using Scott or knockoff brands (the thin "rough" 1000 sheets per roll type). Haven't pumped the tank yet. Should we?

After we had been in this new house 15 years, the Calcasieu parish did home septic tank inspections.
The inspector told me anything over 50% solids failed the test and needed to be pumped out. With just the wife and me, ours was 55% and we put almost nothing down the disposal in the kitchen sink.
I would guess about half the homes in this area needed tanks pumped out and 20-30% needed air pumps repaired. I have heard it said that another inspection is planned soon.
After 18 years, I would say you are way past due to pump out the septic tank unless you live alone.

We lived for decades in a 1970's house with a gravity-fed system that had 4" perforated field lines and no aerator or alarm system. We flushed whatever the hell we wanted, never had an issue, never had it pumped.
Our current place has a newer design with electric aeration and tiny flexible black plastic field lines. We pay to have it pumped every few years. The system clogs and the tank alarm goes off even when we're careful.
