I have a problem with my fridge, my wife spilled some half and half that obviously drained down the back of the fridge. It has created a terrible musty smell(think dead rat/old socks), I have emptied fridge, scrubbed it, poured cleaner down the back to drain in the same path....cleaned out drain basin and put a digestant in there. It wont go away.

Called a repairman, he basically said good luck with it.

Any secrets? I really don't want to go spend a bunch of money on a new one but literally am almost to that point.

put a few open boxes of baking soda in there and see what it does.
also an open bowl of vinegar helps for odors

You likely missed some nook or cranny somewhere. You took every single drawer and shelf and everything off?

Also put a couple baking soda boxes in there and it will eventually go away...

Baking soda in it has helped, the smell seems to be coming from the back out of the fan.

I just think there is something in that drain I cant get to. I guess I can put some more baking soda up in there.

You can put a tray of charcoal in there and it will help with the smell. That's of course, if you have the room.

I recently had a coke explode in my mini fridge. I took everything out and cleaned it with Lysol. No nooks and crannies really. I cleaned it really well so there’s no coke left. But now my fridge smells. I think I fricked up with the Lysol. I’ve had some baking soda in it for a week and I do feel like it’s getting a little better.

Yeah, I am baffled. I mean I have done everything I know to do. You can walk by at times and it is like "oh, it is better". then 5 minutes later "shite"

Yes, the smell is outside the fridge but coming from the fridge definitely.

Is your drip tray removable? If yes remove it and clean it. Also look to see if it overflowed and some of stank is coming from what spilled out of the tray.

It is not removable, but it is full of gunk. My job tonight is to fill it up with vinegar, agitate it and suck out the slurry with a turkey baster or similar.

If you have a shop vac you can duct tape a smaller tube onto the the shop vac hose and suck it out

About the only fix. Once a rot smell permeate the insulation, game over.

Did you look underneath or behind it? Its possible some spilled on the floor or drained down.

Empty it, unplug it, move it outside and get after it with the water hose a bit. Not going to hurt it unless you get carried away. Use a mild detergent inside. Repeat this a few times.

Leave it outside with door open and let it dry out. Bring it back in and plug it in.

baking soda will help absorb odor but it won't solve the root problem. You probably have bacteria growing. use an anti-bacterial chemical. Vinegar is meh at killing bacteria. use high concentration of alcohol if nothing else. You have to kill the bacteria to get rid of the odor.

Been successful with crumpled up newspaper and charcoal with camp fridges. Paper probably not going to be practical in this case. Essential oils will kill the smell but that creates another issue. If all else fails, cap of crab boil will knock any smell out.

Vanilla beans and natural vanilla extract on a paper towel on the bottom of the fridge.
