Agreed to let a friend bring a rainbow salesman by last night for a demo. I had zero issues tell the guy to kick rocks that I wasn’t interested but just wondering are they really worth $2800?

$2800 F THAT dude. I treat vacuums as disposable. Just get a shark and replace every two years.

So, we had some friends come over yesterday, to do a demo and help them get a free cruise. We have a $400 dyson that is about the most I've ever spent and I was telling myself before, I don't buy into these types of things. My Dyson regularly picks up a lot of dirt and when I walk on the bare floors after using it, it feels clean to my feet.

So this guy shows up and starts his spiel, I'm not impressed. He's using it to clean and dust areas that honestly haven't been clean in a while. So he's finding dirt. Then he sees my dyson in the corner of the room and tells me to grab it and clean our area rug in the living room. So it's not a huge area, I do it and it looks clean to me. He then empties out the water reservoir and replaces with clean water and then proceeds to vacuum the area rug. I'm blown away. The water was filled with fricking dirt after this 5' x 8' area was vacuumed. He then goes on to say that you actually use the unit as an air purifier constantly and it removes dirt from the air over time and eventually after a few cleanings and running the system, you drastically cut down on dust and allergens in your home. So we bought one, but we can get it for free if we get 12 people to demo it in 6 months with 2 sales. Seems pretty doable.

After he left, I did our bedroom carpet just next to my wifes side of the bed and I'm honestly embarrassed about what I picked up. We thought we kept a pretty clean home but turns out it was just tidy.

Decide for yourself if that's worth $2800. To me I'm unsure, but wife is pretty sure we can get it for nothing so I can't say. She's usually pretty good at getting deals and what not. I'm honestly not comfortable getting my friends to demo it because I hate when people do that to me. But in this case I'm glad our friends did it for us because I want the kind of clean this thing provides.

No. $2800 towards a cleaning service that comes to your house every so often is definitely worth it though.

It's not the 60's. No reason for a vacuum salesman to be door-to-door.

If you really want clean floors, don't have carpet. Carpet holds dirt that no vacuum can remove. If you've ever taken up carpet, you realize this. There's nothing wrong with carpet, I have it, but you can never get it truly clean. Cleaner? Sure. But not $2,800 cleaner.

You didn’t see the reservoir.

I also see a lot of value in the air purifier aspect of it also.

Best way to buy a Rainbow is used. You see them come up on marketplace/craigslist etc from time to time. But I agree: if air quality in your home is important, get rid of the carpet and go w/tile or wood. I steam clean my tile & wood w/a Shark steamer....you literally can eat off of those floors when freshly steamed.

Well worth it for $400 or so off Ebay.

They last forever so no real worries on mechanicals.

Work incredibly well.

My sister got one and had her guy come do the demo. $2800 Hell no!

I went on great-vacs.com and they refurbed one that is 3-4 years old with Rainbow parts. They even offer a small warranty. $800. It’s totally worth it. The air quality in my home is significantly better. We have a 5 year old, 2 dogs, and 2 cats. My mom couldn’t spend more than 15 minutes in my house without her allergies going crazy. Now, she can sleep overnight and have no trouble.

We had a Dyson for years, and I vacuumed the house with the Dyson. Then, I followed up with the rainbow. It was disgusting.

We were duped into having one of these guys come into our home. After an HOUR of not buying what he was selling (we were young and dumb) he pulled out a microscopic photo of what he called a bed bug, and said, do you know what the goop in your eyes and mouth really is when you wake up? Yeah, bug crap. No kidding He left our house shortly thereafter and he was visibly upset/angry that he didn't sell us on this rip off.

ETA: I've always held on to the position that the fact that the dirt/dust is discharged into a water tank exacerbates how it visually looks vs into a bag or empty (dry) container.

FIFY. I bought a mid-1990's Kirby vacuum for $250 on CL, it was hardly used and came with its original box, extra bags, belts, all the accessories (unused and in original packaging). This thing makes Dysons look like cheap plastic toys and there is no comparison on how much more it can lift out of the carpet. Truly good vacuums are about agitation first and CFM second and while my Kirby might loose some air flow when the bag is full, it will still be moving more air than a brand new and empty Dyson. A bag lasts months and can be tossed in the trash without worrying over a dirt cup and special filters.

Kirby vacuum

My parents bought a Kirby back when I was a kid. They are total suckers for a sales pitch and the guy that came into our house laid it on thick. That being said, it was a tank and I wish I had it today.

They bought every accessory so I used to take it outside and use the hose to vacuum my car. I remember coming back from a hunting trip and vacuuming up all the mud and crap in my floorboard when I sucked up a .22 round. I saw it just as the thing zipped into the vacuum nozzle. I quickly reached over and tried to turn the vacuum off as I could hear the round rattling down the tube. It made it into the vacuum mechanism and detonated with a pretty good bang. My teenage mind was thinking I ruined the vacuum and would be in trouble. Thing just kept running.

Dyson at retail is a rip off too. Buy one off of Ebay that is a factory refurb for under $200.00. We've had our refurb for over 12 years. I think we paid about $160.00 for it and it's still rocking.

A Rainbow is a complete rip off, that is why they are financed by the 'loan shark' payday companies.

How much is the interest rate on a vacuum?

Yes love mine. Had 2 labs that lived in the house and would shed a small dogs worth of hair every day. I went through 2 vacuums a year none would last. The rainbow is now 8 yrs old still going strong.

If instead you vacuumed with the Dyson again, how much would you pick up? Try it, then empty the Dyson canister into clean water in the Rainbow and see what it looks like. Will probably look similar.

You can get a vacuum with a HEPA filter if you want clean air.

If you have to pay interest when purchasing a vacuum, you probably need to look at a different vacuum.
