Pros and Cons of liner pools.

Thinking of installing a pool at the house and leaning towards liner because of the cost difference. I've always heard you don't make your money back on a pool so I don't see the need for the more expensive Gunite pool. Does anyone here have one and regret getting it?

I don't have one, but one of my brother-in-laws bought a house 5 years ago that had this type pool on his property. The previous owners opted to completely enclose the area with a screened cover around the entire pool to keep leaves and other debris out of the pool.
He had to replace the liner once since he's been in the house 3 years ago. Sorry, but I don't know when the pool was originally put in to tell you how long the original liner lasted. I do know he loves it and it is heavily used with his 3 grandkids living just down the block.

well it doesn't have 'gun' in the name so you'll get made fun of on the OT if you want a sissy liner pool vs a manly 'gunite'.
we have one; came with the house. liner was trashed so we put a new one in ($3,000) and its been going strong for 6 years.
we have way too many trees and debris in the pool so occasionally it will stain in places but there's a little bottle of some kind of powder you can put in that costs like $20 and it takes care of it.
i use liquid bleach as my sanitizer and a couple of times i made the mistake of adding it when the pump wasn't running and it settled to the bottom and bleached out the liner in spots but you would never ever notice it unless i pointed it out. it looks like part of the design but i know from where it is its from me.
mostly trouble free; i use bleach & baking soda and that's about all i ever need to do. with gunite you have to worry about water hardness causing rusting or staining but that's not an issue for liners.

If you have a dog go with Gunite, I have heard stories of dogs accidentally ripping liners.

No dog, just 3 rowdy a$$ kids. Sounds like liner may be the way to go if we are looking at being here another 5 years or so. Kids are 11, 8 & 5 so they all should get good use out of it. Thanks for the input.

We put in a liner pool 8 years ago. Got 7 years out of the first liner, and it was going strong until a tornado blew half my roof in the pool and damaged the liner. Insurance bought me a new liner ($3,000). I honestly think I would have gotten 10-12 years out of that first liner.
The cost of my 18' x 36' liner pool was 30k. The cost for a gunite was 60k. I figure at 3k per liner I made the wise choice.

NELA. A dude I DO NOT recommend lol. He took for forever to get the pool installed

sounds like a waste of $30k if you aren't staying there.
Just get a nice above ground pool and take it down when you move. Hell you can even hire someone to dig a hole and stick it in the ground and it'll be a lot cheaper than a liner pool, and you could still remove it and fill the hole in when you move.

I can't hate on the above ground pool. Dug out an old smaller one a few weeks ago to set in the lower deck for the kids. Turns out I need a new pump and hoses for it. Just a little 8 foot model that gets about 3 feet deep but jumping in after cutting grass is just some white trash heaven.

One of the pros is you can customize the shape and depth unlike a fiberglass pool. My parents put one in when I was in middle school. We dug it deep (9.5 ft) and got the good spring board.

Come late June and on till late September it's going to feel like a hot tub. Won't be nothing refreshing about it once that water heats up in that small pool.

I remember it getting warm the last time we had it up, which was 3-4 years ago. Honestly thought I had thrown it out, but did some digging around in the basement looking for something else and found it.
It has a low drain on one side, and I would pull that, let it drain for a few minutes, and about 1/3 to 1/2 of the water would empty out and I would replace with cold hose water. Also helped to keep the water clean. Even with a pump and the little chlorine tabs, we would get leaves and bugs in there and I would have to scoop them out before getting in it. But it was mainly for the kids to splash around in during the week while everyone was working. We would go to neighborhood pools or a country club pool with family most weekends, but they all worked during the week so my wife wanted something at home that was easy to set up and take down.

Yeah, i'm not talking about the $50 above ground pool. And i don't really give a shite what other people think about my trashy above ground pool. I built a nice deck around it and my kids love it, as well as every kid that comes swim in it.
You can get the $600 Intex pool and build a $1-2k deck around it and it will look great, or you can get a really nice semi-above ground pool, spend $3-6k on the pool and another $2k on the deck, and it look really nice. And both of those options are really easy to remove when it's time to move out your house, or take down once your kids get older and you and the wife don't use it as much and you're tired of keeping up with cleaning when you just use it a couple times a year.
If i knew i was staying long term at this house, i'd seriously consider an in ground pool, and i still am and may do so in the next year or two, but for the time being, the free $600 pool i received, and the $1,500 deck i built will suffice for now.

We have an oval above ground pool sunk 1/2 way with deck and table/bar area on one side. It’s awesome! No way I’d dumped tons of $$ on an inground pool. If ours last 8-10 years it’ll be worth it. Kids have been in it a ton so it’s worth it to us.

That's true. If you live in the country where you have a massive yard and can build an expansive deck around it to hide the ghetto pool then it isn't that bad. In NOLA it just looks trashy. I know I bought one last summer. Sold it right at the beginning of the pandemic. Almost made all my money back.

I had one built about 5 years ago. The reason why was cost - much cheaper than a gunite or fiberglass pool. Now, my wife says she wishes we would have gone with a gunite (mainly for aesthetic purposes) but I am glad we didn't.
Maintenance is pretty easy....I have a chlorine pool (not salt)
When I sell my current home (whenever that is) I don't expect it to add value to my house, that's for sure.
