Just getting into this. Got started with watching Lawn Care Nut. After having true green for 2 years I wanted to learn more and give it a try myself. I enjoy the work. Must be getting old.
I have a mix of shade and sun. Kentucky blue grass, perennial rye, fine fescue mix.
April-rake it. Throw down milo. I know I should probably wait to grow more down and not up...but I get a little antsy for better growth and green up.
Tenacity for pre emergent. I bought this product because I get a little bit of aggressive bentgrass from the neighbor. I have dug it out for 2 years but now I am going to this product.
After the premergent I am taking round with a glove over glove technique to get rid of some crappy fescue that is mixed into the lawn from the nearby park. This is noticeable to me because the blades are thicker, it is bunchy, and grows quicker than the rest of the lawn. So I am going to get a little crazy and try to remove it without damaging the rest of the lawn too much.
May- milo for memorial day. Cut every 4 days. Keep it 3-3.5.
Add topsoil and level areas.
June- cut once a week.
July- milo for the 4th. Get a rotation of area watering going.
August- area watering going.
Sept- milo. Aerate. Top dress. Overseed KGB blend and some rye. Might splurge for high quality seed.
October- bag grass and leaves.
November- milo and cut slightly shorter. Bag grass and leaves.
Milo has been my go to. I know you need a little balance though for the other 2 numbers. Any suggestions?
Weed control I generally pluck by hand as I go. My goal is front yard 100 percent weed free. Side and back yards 85 percent. Would rather use as little herbicide as possible with little kids around. So I plan to use tenacity and round up by the 1st week in May and then go herbicide free if possible.

What do people do for dog pee?

My neighbor bangs this crack head she went to high school with. He cuts her grass and mine.

Only thing that really helps is water and lots of it.

Yup. When we're having our normal wet Spring, I hardly notice dog pee spots. They really show up July/August time frame and I'm pretty good about watering. You just can't beat dog pee and a roasting sun unless you have a sprinkler system and probably ran it twice a day.

I used to give this to my dog and it def worked. After a while I was worried about long-term effect on the dog so I stopped (probably paranoia). She never showed any side effects or anything I just had a change of heart I guess.

1) First cut of the year at 2.25"
2) rest of year is always cut at 2.75"
3) Mow every 4 days.
4) Sharpen blades at beginning of every month.
5) Use Earth Right organic lawn conditioner in spring
6) Grub prevention goes down first weekend in July
7) Use Earth Right in late august
8) Seed down after labor day
9) Sept thru Nov put 3 lbs of nitrogen down in various forms
I have a mix of TTTF and KBG in my lawn.

It depends on the issue. Dog pee can cause problems because of excess nitrogen and/or it could cause issues due to salts.
If it is salts, gypsum works well for many. My brother had this issue due to several dogs using the yard. Gypsum applications whenever he saw brown spots forming again clears it up in a day or two every time.
If it is a nitrogen issue I have not looked into that much. Watering would help probably.

I mentioned earlier I was considering aeration. House is a new build with centipede on a tightly packed clay soil. I’ve got a guy coming out in a day or two to do that.
Should I go ahead and apply an organic fertilizer immediately after?

I just aerated and then applied Carbon X 8-1-8 right after.

Just bought a house in NOLA area and previous owners had big dogs. I’m guessing the damage is due to them. Anything I can do here or just burn it all to the ground and start over?

That's from dog pee. It will fill in this summer.
My dog does that to my yard and every summer it fights back then loses again over winter.

Thats good to hear. We are planning on demoing the entire yard and all plants/patios flower beds in the next couple years and starting from scratch, but I wanted a little bit of green for the little one to play in until then.

Yes. You can put it out after. Are you top dressing with sand?
Posted on 4/23/20 at 5:47 pm to 3oliv3
I’m on my phone and the picture gets super distorted when I zoom in. Is that centipede or st aug?

I was just gonna top dress in the trouble spots.

Pretty sure it’s a mix of both with more st aug, but there are a ton of weeds so hard to say for sure.
