Thinking of getting one of these in case our power goes out. Do they need to be vented thru a window? If so, how would the hose go thru the window?

Now... I'm certainly not trying to be a smart-arse, but...
Open the window. Put hose through it. Profit.

Seriously... don't most of them come with something that will go in the open space with a hole for the hose?

Yes, As far as I know they all do

And op...a portable Ac is a great idea for power outages and if your AC craps put.

Make you something like this out of cardboard and seal it up good so you don't lose the cold air.

I have had a couple of those units. No need to use cardboard, they all come with a piece that fits in the open window gap and adjusts to size.

Better off with a window unit.

I've had one for awhile now. Thankfully, don't use it often. But, when the power is out, it's worth it's weight in gold. BTW, I also have a portable generator.

Yes. And you need a place for the water to drain.

Window units work so much better than those portable units and they are cheaper. When we run the generator and window units when the power is out it isn't much different than running our 5 ton A/C.

Yeah, or if you get a portable unit get one with two hoses. The dual hose models use outside air to cool the condenser, whereas the single hose ones draw indoor air over the condenser before exhausting it outside. So they dump conditioned air outside and create negative pressure inside, which draws outside air in through the leaks of the house.

I've got a portable unit and a window unit. I think the portable unit is the higher BTU one or at least the same as the window unit, yet it does almost nothing to cool my large living room off when running by itself. THe portable unit will turn the living room into an ice box at night, which is really all i'm concerned about when the power goes out.

Yeah the window unit is a bigger pain in the butt to install, but it works 10xs better.
