Hi all. We are looking at building a pool and adding an addition onto our house. The addition will have a covered area with a fireplace, a storage room, a bathroom, and an outdoor shower. Currently, the plans for the bathroom do not include a window or air conditioning/heat. There will be a bathroom vent.

Has anybody done something similar with a poolhouse bathroom? I'm concerned that I will regret not having a window for ventilation/airflow purposes.

We just finished something similar but we have a mini split in the poolhouse. We have a transom window in the shower simply for the natural light. It does not open. If you won't have AC, I'd definitely want a window for ventilation.

I guess if you won't have a shower inside the restroom, that will help keep the moisture down. Where are you located?

Southeast LA. St. Tammany.

The builder said a window would be great, but that a bathroom vent would be sufficient if we didn’t want to add a window.

I don’t have any issue with adding a window per se. I just don’t know if I’ll be able to find one to match our others.

I'd be super worried about mold/mildew in a closet that had water (toilet) in it with only a vent for air circulation... At a minimum I'd want humidistat or thermostat to turn the vent/fan on automagically.

Assuming this is a reasonably nice house so you don't want a window unit, but its not just airflow as said its moisture. I don't see how you could only have a vent in a bathroom and keep mildew/ mold at bay for a pool bathroom that's going to get wet. Unless you wanted to do it like an enclosed outdoor bathroom, so use materials made to get wet like a lot of tile.

Maybe even a portable AC? I'd think a really small AC that just plugs in would be nice, and it will remove moisture also.

That's basically what it is - an enclosed outdoor bathroom, but without insulation. The flooring will be the same porcelain pavers that are on the outside under the covered area/on my patio.

The mini split idea is an option. Is there a small enough mini split to accommodate such a small space? We are talking 40 sqft.

I wouldn't do a mini split for 40 sqft, I would install the fan and a vent and do a portable A/C. Small Cheap and will keep the humidity down when needed.

I'll look into them. FWIW, I don't mind spending the money on a mini split if it would work for the application. It's a custom house and we are going to be here for a long time. The bathroom finishes will probably be shiplap wall, there will be some shelving or cabinets, and a vanity with mirror and lights.

I added an enclosed bathroom that does not have an AC or mini-split in a similar scenario. It does have a window but I never ever open it.

I don't have a mildew problem... mostly a dirt dauber problem.

I have an outdoor by pool enclosed 1/2 bath without a window and just the bathroom vent. my shower is on the outside wall. No ac, no window, no mold, no issues. its just a toilet, pedestal sink. Interior is finished, insulated, sheetrock, ceramic tile flooring, etc.

Its more overkill than cost, and you would have to run 220v (most mini splits are 220v) or buy a 110v mini split.

Did you ever receive my email? It bounced back to me and I tried a second time. It seems like it went through the 2nd time.

I built my outdoor kitchen about three years ago and struggled with the same question during the build. Ended up not doing any type of AC in the bathroom. It has a window - but I’ve never opened it. And it obviously has a vent fan - but just a typical bathroom vent, nothing special. I’ve never regretted my decision. No one is in there long enough for it to matter. And it’s really not hot in the summer.

Got it, thanks! It was in my spam folder. You have an awesome space. Kinda similar in the open air sense to what I’ve got plans for, I just won’t have as much of an enclosed area. I love the fireplace y’all did.

Thanks for the input. That looks really great. My plans have a lantern on either side of the fireplace. Are yours gas or electric?

We have a pool. We couldn’t imagine not having one. We don’t have a pool house. It’s a great idea though. My colleague has a pool with a pool house and even has a dog shower room which I thought was a nice touch.
He’s a duck hunter and he uses it all the time

My last house I had a 1/2 bath outside no vent or ac and didnt have mold. Tile floor and sheetrock walls. As long as i kept the door closed it stayed reasonably cool or warm leaching from the main house.
