The plumber is charging me $1650 to run a 3/4 pex hot water line from upstairs attic hot water heater to downstairs master bathroom tub. The old line is galvanized pipe and runs really slow. Is that a decent price? The price includes labor and materials.

How is he accessing the old plumbing to make the change? Cutting through drywall? If so is he repairing the drywall or leaving it unrepaired when the plumbing is completed?

He said that a small hole would be cut in sheetrock in bathroom.

There was not mention of repairs to drywall.

To fully answer your question, get another quote or two.

I don't know the plumber cost, lets figure $250 hr for the truck plumber and helper. 2 hours of work, 1 hour of drive time and $75 in materials if he isn't repairing the drywall. The quote seems high but my numbers could be off also.

I thought it was high also. Probably going to get another estimate. Seems like everything is expensive.

That’s high. I just roughed in a basement half bath and future upstairs shower and only charged 1500…but I’m also not licensed…I’m only a registered and insured handyman…I probably charged low, but it was one of my neighbors and I wanted to get the work

Sounds very high to me. Yes, plumbers are expensive and I get that.

Pex is very inexpensive. Some of the fittings, valves, & connectors are a little pricey but not too bad.

Labor & warranty is where most of the cost is coming from.

Without going into much detail, I would assume you are talking about less 20 foot of pex?

Running the pex through existing wall?

Yeah, get another estimate or two.

You may even want to DIY. A few youtube vids should steer you in the right direction.

The cold water is fine? You probably don’t need 3/4” fwiw. Most faucets wouldn’t be able to handle that, but I don’t know your set up.

It’s really hard to know without being on site. As said a second quote is recommended. I’d assume for $1650 that almost a full days work plus a few supplies. But I’m guessing it won’t take nearly that long.

When I moved out of state, I was looking for a great plumber. I went to a big plumbing supply house. Started talking with a salesman there. He gave me a name of a father and son plumbing company. Been using them ever since. Best of luck.

I did this also recently. And they hit an electrical line and basically panicked and disappeared.

Those guys can be good but they are working for cash

There's your mistake.

This is a 5 hour job, at least that's what they will tell you.

You're aggravating them for this small job that should take them about an hour at most, so they are charging you for a half day's worth of work.

I got the same kind of quote wanting to run a gas line in my attic down to my stove. The T was already in place with a valve. Just had to run pipe about 30' across the attic, make a 90, run it another 10' across the attic, then go down to the stove. There's literally nothing in the way of either run. Material costs less than $100, yet they wanted to charge me $2,100. I just laughed and said i'll give you another chance to say something reasonable or you just wasted both of our times. He said that's what it is. So i said well thanks for your time but see ya later.

I'm not a plumber but my neighbor is a contractor and he says that if a plumber has to go up in the attic or under the house it's automatically $400-$500 extra.
