I am giving strong consideration to getting away from the "frankinstien" approach to my front yard and going with Zoysia.

My yard is currently a combination of centipede, bermuda, weeds, and dead spots where I killed the weeds but the bermuda didn't fill in as I had hoped it would. I had ordered a couple pallets of zoysia to fill in the shaded areas that are currently bare. The pallets will be delivered next week but I am now considering adding a few more pallets, nuking existing yard, and starting from scratch.

Please let me know if I should add any steps to my preparation:

1) Kill existing grass with round up tomorrow
2) Spray again on Sun
3) Remove dead grass with rake Tues or Wed
4) Put down a layer of fertilizer 18-24-6 Wed
5) Receive sod on Thurs
6) Wet soil and lay sod on Sat

Do I need to til the soil once I rake up dead grass? Yard was aerated a month ago.

Should I put down pre-emergent before or after laying sod?

What is the likelihood that weeds will come back next summer?

I appreciate any feedback on my plan.

have whoever does it scape the existing out and then lay the zoysia. then water well and hire a company to spray 3 to 4 times a year to keep the weeds out. this allows the grass to really take. in one year you will have a lawn that is perfectly mature and weed free.

we did ours after a chinch bug issue about 8 years ago and the only complaint that i have is that zoysia produces so many clippings it takes rakes and blowers to clean up in the summer. i fill up 2 trash large trash cans every time i cut. it is a job!.

You don't really need to put down fertilizer as it has been ferted regularly at the sod farm. You also don't need to wet the soil as you'll give it a deep watering after you are finished laying it.

DO NOT PUT DOWN A PRE EMERGENT. FASTEST WAY TO WASTE ALL THAT MONEY ON THE SOD.

Ronk I have decided to add scope to my project and was wondering if you did this professionally in the BR area?

If so, how do I contact you to discuss the SOW?

This is very ambitious timeline for a kill application. Glyphosate takes much longer to kill the plant. You won’t have much dead/rake-able by this date.

I’ve done this several times and it’s only REALLY dead after at least 2 weeks. I usually spray once, then scalp after 3-4 days, then spray again after a week, then till a week or so later.

If somebody is going to scrape the lawn, you may be okay since it will remove most of the material anyway.

I just looked them up. They seeem pretty solid. You don’t find many services with that type of equipment.

A friend of mine on this forum just used them for grading and zoysia installation. They are solid.

I just started plugging and sodding zoysia to give it a chance going into the spring. Between that and filling bare spots I may be too tight to put down fall pre emergent

Great choice. I put that down in my mom’s yard. I’ve got Palisades and it’s good too. Sure stays green during droughts.

I don’t recommend this but it’s just a story. My neighbor is on the impatient side. Early this spring he got pissed off at his centipede. He scalped his yard, didn’t bag anything nor turn the soil over. An 18 wheeler pulled up and he literally threw the sod out right on top of the grass he had. The spring rains kept it watered good and by August he had one of the greenest yards in the neighborhood. I mean that yard looks like a poster yard on a picture type nice.

You’ll love it! SO much better than st. aug, Bermuda, or centipede.

You should rent a sod remover or get it scraped, I think your first three steps are very labor intensive and have low efficacy.

I just hired Southern Grasshoppers. They're going to do the installation in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the recommendation.
