I'm wanting to repaint pretty much our whole downstairs myself. I can't bring myself to paying someone thousands of $$ to do it. We're in the middle of a total kitchen renovation, and I'm already spending the crap out of money on that...

The only issue is our great room has a 22' ceiling, and I'm honestly really afraid of heights.. yes, even that especially climbing up and down a little giant ladder.

I was thinking I could either rent some scaffolding or rent a small scissor lift for a day or two. Anyone ever use a lift in their house? The flooring in the downstairs is all being replaced, and it's a slab house. Shouldn't damage anything I guess.

Something like this. I think it costs about $150/day. Would make getting the high areas much easier. Don't think my fear of heights would be bad on that either.

You answered your own question with the lift. I can’t make you not afraid of height though. But it sounds like you can’t be both afraid of heights and paint your ceilings.

That lift is the ticket. They make small ones that go through doors. Just make sure you can maneuver it. Also will likely have to build a ramp to get it over your threshold. But a weekend with one of those should do the trick.

That's what I was saying.. don't think being up on this would bother me. Plus don't wanna climb a 20ft ladder 50 times.

Yeah, will have to build a couple of small ramps to get it in there.

A lift like that is heavier than you might think. You’ll have to be careful not to damage flooring.

Nevermind, I see you’re replacing flooring anyway.

have you ever used a scissor lift? If you are afraid of heights, that lift may not be to your liking.

That high up and moving around will pucker your butt in that lift if you are scared of heights

It’s a very unnerving feeling for sure, scared or not. You can lower it to move. Might cost you time but still better than climbing ladder

I wouldn't be moving it while it was extended. That's not a good thing to do. Guessing there some warning stickers stating that on the equipment. I'm in occupational health and safety. We had two people almost die doing that on the job. Fell over. One was crippled for life. It was a larger lift though.

Looks like you're limited to the lift or getting one of those 24' telescopic poles. The poles would help get the walls painted, but probably will need to scale a ladder a few hundred times to cut it around the crown/ceiling

Yeah, that's the whole issue. I'm going to paint up to about 2-3 ft from the ceiling, rent a lift for 24 hours, finish up to the ceiling.

Just called United Rentals. A 2 day rental and them delivering and picking up is $830. Not too bad I guess when you factor in not having to rent a trailer. I don't have a trailer to carry 3,000 lbs.

Seems about $200 for just the rental. So one day rental delivered will be around $630. Worth it I think.

I bet a paint crew would quote me around $4,000 or more for the work. I'll save a decent amount.

1) get some estimates and hire a painter
2) book a weekend out of town for you and the wife
3) have fun on that weekend
4) come home to a freshly painted living room

2 things to consider. Can the lift fit through your doorway and can your floors support then weight if the lift?

This. Op you have enough money to afford a house with 22 fricking foot ceilings and you are doing a kitchen remodel, plus you hate heights. I’m all about DIY but you are going to hate this.

How many walls do you have that are 22ft? I would absolutely call around and get some quotes first.

Cutting in at the ceiling is going to pucker your a hole on that lift. You will need to be 17ft high or more.

I did the same thing with 22' ceilings a few years ago. I rented a normal ladder that was 18'. It did the trick. The difficulty was transporting it from the rental place without use of a trailer

We painted the walls in a 2 floor room , but not the ceiling.
We used a long extension ladder and one of us stayed at the base at all times.
A little unnerving, but we did it ok
