Home layout setup:
2800' home with attached 400' two car garage, attic from garage to home is full access.

I have friend that leaves his garage door cracked open and the attic access pull down stairs cracked open. He swears that in the summer this helps too significantly cool his attic temp.

Anyone want to weigh in to the pro's / con's of this?

Initially, I can't think of a flaw. It seems to make sense that giving your attic access to more fresh air intake would be good. Continuous soffit vents are a thing.

There is a ratio they suggest of intake to exhaust venting, so perhaps this might throw off the magic ratio and screw up flow?

Why does the attic need to be cooler? I mean it sounds like a good thing, but not if it's my AC doing the work. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the layout.

Because all of the cold components of your AC. Evaporator, plenum and ducts that carry the cold air throughout the house are going through the hot attic. The hotter the attic, the more loss of cold air you will experience in the living area. Even with the insulation on those components, there is a significant loss.

I routinely do this on the weekends when we are home all day. Open the attic access, and most of the time I'll set up an outdoor fan blowing up into the opening. It definitely helps.

You talking the attic ceiling access door in the house is what you open to let cold air from the house into the hot attic?

Surely he is talking about one in the garage.

I would hope nobody is that stupid to open an attic access from inside the house

I do this exact same thing. I've got no proof it really helps but it makes me feel like I'm doing something

Yes, the attic access in the garage (garage is not climate controlled).

Based upon feedback I will give this a try.

Yes, it's actually in my attached shed. I open the roll up shed door and open the attic access.

This is effectively doing the same thing as adding more soffit vents.

this would def make a difference if his attic ventilation wasnt designed right or perhaps his vents under his soffit is clogged and not allowing proper airflow..

My garage gets hot enough without adding attic heat to it.

I was sitting here reading these responses and thinking to myself “what are these dumbasses doing? There is no way that is a worthwhile thing to do!”

It wasn’t until someone pointed out that attic access from the exterior was what they were talking about lol.

I do this also when home and open the garage door about a foot. You can feel a draft going up to the attic and checking with infrared thermometer it seems to lower the attic temperature about 10 degrees.
My theory was that not only are ducts and coils exposed to that heat but if the attic is shy on insulation it helps to reduce the attic temp.

Heat rises my friend. Doing what the OP suggested would lower your garage temps as well as your attic temps.

That is true. I open my garage door each morning at daylight to get cooler air in it. Once the temperature in the garage starts going back up I close the garage door. This morning I opened the attic access also. I have one of my temperature sensors in the garage. I also have two ceiling fans in there. My garage door gets the hot afternoon sun, so I normally close it.
