the island is one thing i’m still trying to figure out. need to get in the space and mark some areas after moving the existing to get a feel of what it would be like. my thought is center the new one and either square or rectangle but have a counter extend towards our breakfast area and be able to have a few stools for sitting
here is the existing again for reference

My advice is listen to those here who are pointing out small things that were overlooked like drawers and cabinet doors/openings etc. Also do you all cook a lot, bake etc. this is an opportunity to make your kitchen nice but more important make it functional and easy to navigate and use daily. Your designer should be helping you think about these things and offering ideas.

What about a longer rectangular island with seating on one side?
Your square island looks a little weird in that space.
Was going to say the same thing. I'm wondering what the dimensions are on that sucker, because it looks big enough that people wouldn't be able to reach the middle of it, making part of it useless. Not to mention it takes up more space, requires a bigger (more expensive slab), etc. Seems like a rectangular island would provide more usable space and more room in the kitchen. Not to mention room for more seats.
Also, am i seeing that you'd have cabinets on the side of the island where the chairs would be? That seems inefficient.
I think you need to think about a rectangular island, and instead have the chairs run along the left hand side of it, with the cabinets on the right (facing the wall with the sink on it.) That would open things up a bit, make it easier to serve people sitting at the island, and also make it easier for people sitting at those seats to see into the living room if there's a game on or people over.
Something like this:

You’re going to regret a square island. Listen to everyone. Also put in a proper vent hood, box in the fridge, get a built in or counter depth fridge, and put microwave on the shelf left of fridge, at a comfortable height. Go to the ceiling with cabinets, and that double oven wall depending on tile choice might look awesome being tiled as well for bling.

Microwave by the fridge
Just food for thought: putting the microwave close to/next to the fridge is convenient placement, but you have to be mindful of how both the microwave and fridge open. If they’re right beside one another, there’s the potential for them to collide if opened simultaneously. That could dent the fridge door or screw up the microwave door/drawer alignment. Some might say they’ll never be opened at the same time, but always remember Murphy’s Law.
This can be mitigated by getting a fridge that swings opposite the direction (all microwaves are right swinging) of the microwave, but most people like French door fridges now...

this is exactly why I made the thread. thanks for the feedback on the island. rectangular does seem to be better, just wondering if i would do chairs on the opposite side or just leave it. breakfast area is pretty close so dont really need countertop seating

Leave at least 30” for dishwasher clearance, 36” is ideal. Looks like you can make the rectangle island a little wider and/or overhang the countertop on the island and stash counter stools under the overhang.
Many new refrigerator have zero clearance hinges even if they are not built in refrigerators

the program makes sure you have 48" for any cabinet/drawer openings

That looks great. I would beef up the surface area of the island if possible.

Even if you don’t want a full length countertop overhang on the long edge to accommodate stools. consider extending the countertop on the end to allow for one stool beneath. This makes a convenient spot to do sit-down kitchen jobs (like shelling peas), or for someone to sit and hang out while visiting with the cook. I’ve got a similar arrangement in my kitchen and it’s also a convenient place to grab a quick bite to eat by yourself.

What software are you using to create the renders? I will be doing the same thing soon and need a program to start moving things around in.

From your picture, it looks like there is a large amount of space for the island. With that much space, it's tempting to make the island extra wide. Just keep in mind that if more than one of you cook and/or prep at the same time in the kitchen, wider aisles are nice. Our aisles are 36" and 37", which is fine, but ideally, 42" or more if you want a two butt kitchen instead of a one butt kitchen.
ETA: And the measurement should be from counter edge to counter edge, not cabinet to cabinet.
One of us has a wider butt than the other, so we just walk on different sides of the island when necessary.

Two things:
- Is that your only pantry space?
- Do you want/need a double oven? If not, I'd move the microwave above the single oven.

Is there a bulkhead remaining above the fridge and microwave area? If not, you're missing crown moulding there. The rendering is hard to decipher there.
It's a matter of personal-taste, I guess, but are you going to match drawer fronts to the cabinet doors? I always find it odd when the drawer fronts are plain.
I agree with this. My wife wanted two ovens. So we did a wall-oven under my gas cooktop and a wall-oven/microwave combo.
Another thing is, I still recommend going to the ceiling with your upper cabinets. Increasing size of those upper cabinets from 30" tall to 36" or 42" cabinets will give you much more storage space. I just think you'll regret not making those cabinets taller if you stick with 30".
I'm still recommending you try to dress up those ends:
-Of the island
-The exposed end of the refrigerator cabinet
-The exposed ends of the upper cabinets on the sides of the vent hood.
-The exposed end of the tall cabinet for wall-oven
and the

When someone is sitting in the stool by the fridge, will the fridge be able to be opened?
