Well frick yeah it's a good idea. You can change the carburetor jets on a good generator to use different fuels.

Don’t get one too big. You mother in law and rest of your wife’s family will come over until they get power back.

We have a Generac that comes on automatically and tests itself once a week and recharges the battery. It's powered by natural gas. Unfortunately, ours does not power the central heating unit so it can and has gotten hot during long term power outages.

If no natural gas, you can get a propane tank but it might be a little more expensive to operate.

Interested. Do you mind me asking the cost?

Go with what you can afford. In general water cooled is a much better option for continuous duty after a major storm. It will run cooler.

Also, many people miss a couple important facts.
1) If its running 24/7 you have about 4-5 days on an air cooled unit before needing an oil change. Hours add up fast on continuous duty.
2) The service plans/warranty are ok if you arent a DIY type and there isnt an emergency situation. BUT, dont expect service or repairs during a major outage. Everyone else needs help too and there arent enough techs to go around. Friends in lake charles found this out the hard way.

I have a portable diesel unit but Im heavy DIY and i have diesel available.

Get a whole whole generator. It’s worth it in the end, especially if power gets knocked out for more than a week or 2 and you can run your ACs.

Not only is it unbearable to sleep in a house in the summer with no AC but you’ll prevent mildew from growing.

They are a life saver.

We got one. Power went out for hour and half yesterday as soon as I got home. Took 30 seconds to kick on. AC running, appliances, and pool pumps. Love it.

Moved in this house day before Ida and it was awesome. Power went out as soon as we sat down to eat ribeyes, 30 seconds later the whole house had power. It was glorious. Highly recommend one.

We recently bought a house with a whole house one and a small storm brought down a power line at like 6pm. 99 degrees outside.

Son of a gun cut on and ran for like 10 hours. AC never got above 71 and I slept like a baby so did my infant and toddlers

fricking worth its weight in gold.

Just turn off the AC while the drier is running, are you really doing that much laundry during a power outage?

and i run a 4 ton unit with a soft start off a 7kw inverter generator

Everyone I know that has them says it's one of the best purchases they've ever done for their home.

24kw Generac here. Yes, one of the best purchases I've made. It was about $11,000 turnkey.

I have a 9500 watt tri-fuel. Can easily power the whole house, minus central air, oven, and dryer. I have two window units on a shelf in my garage. The generator brand new was $1200, and another $200 in electrical materials to add breakers and power inlet on my back porch where I have a natural gas quick connect. Was definitely a lot cheaper than the Generac route. I looked at getting a soft start kit for my central air and a bigger generator, but figured you're looking at twice the cost for a short term need that's only needed very rarely. Can manage with window units for a couple of days

I pretty much have the same setup; love it. I have a soft start but I'm not installing until after the summer. I don't need to jack with the A/C during this brutal summer in Houston.

Diesel when many in your hood have one and they will you will see it fail because others are swiping gas not enough volume to satisfy all the gensets that’s why you want diesel don’t be dependent on natural gas. The government can commandeer any utility go diesel it may be a little bit of a hassle but if you are that much of a Princess go buy natural gas diesel is more efficient as a fuel

You spend a weekend with Hunter Biden man? That is a heck of a sentence(s) there.

Have a good weekend baw.

Are you asking about a whole house generator or a portable generator. It definitely matters in which way you want to power your house

My neighbor recently put in a whole home generator. He put in a Generac for an 1800sq ft. house and he said it cost around $17000... He has over estimated things in the past so I took that value with a grain of salt...

I think I paid $8600 or $6800 for a 24kw Generac 2 years ago.
