About to start building our forever home. What’s the pros and cons of both. If it where yalls house what would y’all chose. I read a bunch of good things about both. I know hardi board has been around forever. TIA

I sell both. I like both. Both have question marks. We haven’t seen Smartside in this area on a house for extended periods.
I had Hardie on a house for 20 years. Did a remodel and when I tore the Hardie off I feel like it had become brittle. Was still holding well but it just didn’t feel the same.
As far as look there is not a better product than Hardie’s artisan series.

I’m planning on doing the siding myself on our house. I’m using LP because it is a wood product and I feel way more comfortable working with it than I do a concrete material. I think both are good if you follow the correct installation instructions. I have all the tools to work with LP so that is why I am picking it.

My house is roughly 25 years old. The back has some kind of wood siding. I removed a door that went to the patio and cannot find that material anywhere to replace that wall. Any ideas on where to find older stuff. I will try to find a pic.

in our remodel we removed 80 year old wood siding and did the hardie boards.
my wife wanted to do the board and batton style, but our house is in a historic district and our contractor and i convinced her to do the hardie lap instead. i didn't care for LP because it reminded me too much of 70s and 80s homes.
i personally love it and i'm going to die before it starts getting brittle i hope.

Building mine right now and we went with the board and batten over the Hardi. We liked that it gives it a different look over the horizontal siding style.

Fiber board or real wood board and batten?

Going with the fiber since it seems to last longer, looks the same as real and doesn't require as much upkeep through the years.

My house was built in 1999 and has hardie plank siding on the rear portions. It has held up perfectly save a few chips along the bottoms.
I built an office and a shed and wrapped the entire building in Hardie siding, hardie soffits and fascias because it will never rot. We live in the jungle so I'm a fan of not having wood exposed when I can.

As a builder, we use a lot of Hardi.
We also use a pre finished product called WoodTone which is very nice, holds up, and has a great warranty.

What is the price difference between hardi and WoodTone. Also is there anyone local around the Baton Rouge are you like to deal with?

Just built a home with niche siding which is very similar to Hardie. I like it a lot. We did the board and batten under the porches and lap style around the house so mix it up some. Looks really good and it’s actually pretty easy to install yourself if you have the right tools and know where your plumbing pipes are. I’m not family with the LP but I would do the hardie/ niche again. Only real negative I can see is the need to paint it later on down the road.

I sell both. We just started selling the LP Smartsiding a year or so ago. It surprised me how long it has been around. It started up north 20 or more years ago. They have just now made a push in the southern market. I think it’s a good product but it is a hard sale because it is a waferboard product and it looks like OSB on the backside.
