Was this Montura?

This is from a small nursery just outside of Tampa. About 25 minutes from my place. He doesn’t have many mango varieties to choose from; but, what he does have are generally freakishly large and priced very well. I ended up getting a 25g Glenn plus this oversized Sweet Tart and that OS for $600 delivered. Best deal in town for sure.

I’ll probably hit Montura this week in search of Dusari, Kesar and others.

Man that OS looked awesome. Sorry it broke. Love OS.

The challenge with so many of the tropical fruit trees in FL is that they stack them up like cord wood in the nursery.

So the trees are forced to grow up instead of out to seek sunlight. Tall and lanky is quite common.

That OS broke about 3 feet up simply by being laid on the ground to remove the pot and then set upright. It encountered the slightest amount of pressure from being top heavy and snapped.

My advice is to look for big thick trunks and short, wide trees. They are a rare breed; but, will better produce and are less likely to have such problems.

Just ordered an Arken Starfruit from Lara Farms. The Kari was out of stock and I'm impatient. I was torn between the Arken and Bells. Went with Arken since it isn't supposed to be as sweet.

You wanted the less sweet one? Usually it's the opposite. Bell is considered one of the very best, right there with Kari whereas Arkin is the old commercial cultivar you find in grocery stores.

In any event, a tree ripened Arkin is going to beat any store bought fruit.

Yo Lanier, lipstick palm update. I finally got it to push new growth after 3 months lol. After growing a bunch of container palms, I can definitely say that leaving the old ugly fronds on the tree is important, especially when first establishing. It is known that they recycle the tissue nutrients, but I never really knew how much it mattered. Turns out it's pretty important, at least at first. I'm going to let the lipstick hang on to all old fronds until I've got strong new growth in the larger container. Average temperature in the grow room has been 81F since January and average humidity 73%. This palm wants to be warm, wet, and humid.

Well, I am making dirt today. . Man I hope I am doing this right. I am going to repot my flame thrower, a big majestic and some smaller ones.

1/3 Coco Coir
1/3 Pumice 1/2"
1/3 Mix of Paver sand and Pearlite (big pieces)

I threw in a handful of Mycorrhizal Inoculant and a triple handful of charcoal.

Before adding the Coco Coir

Final. Let me know if this looks right. I tried to get the mix as close as I could

Not sure if I was suppose to or not but I drilled some extra drain holes in the bottom of the 10 and 15 gallon containers

You did all of this exactly how I would do it, extra holes and all. And yeah, that mix looks right. I like to add about 0.75 inches of compost on top with fertilizer and mulch on top of that, always keeping the root flare high and exposed.

Yeah I'm weird. When I read about how sweet they are I figured I'd like the less sweet one more. From what I've read it should still be pretty sweet.

Kari is not cloyingly sweet. Brix of 8-9. For reference a very sweet mango would be in the 20s.

For the pawpaw guys, thought I'd pass this along. Finding first hand info about pawpaws successfully growing in zone 9 is rare, but we've got an experienced Houston grower here:

Cogshall is also a dwarf mango.

Andrew has a great list of stuff and I highly recommend him. On this list, the best things IMO are the Silas Wood sapodilla and the Kari starfruit. Both excellent performers in containers.

That was my plan from your instructions. I got almost everything done today that I wanted to get done. I have a cat palm thats not replanted and a big house plant that needs to be replanted and thats it. I am not messing with my new lipstick palm just yet. I am going to let it get settled in a few months before I repot it.

But here is what I did today.

Flame Thrower moved from a 7gal to a 15 gal
Majestic Palm moved from a 10 gal to a 15 gal
Elephant Ear moved from a 3 gal to a 7 gal
5 different Desert Roses repoted in slightly larger pots or in the same pots

All got the new soil. All got manure compost on top, then Osmocote then cypress mulch top dressing.

I had almost 50 gallons of old potting soil mix and I used it on my trees in my yard. After potting everything today, I went through my flower beds , pulled all the mulch back, spread fertilizer then added some of the old potting soil from those plants then put the mulch back. I figure it wil atleast help hold some moisture in and keep the fertilizer from washing away this week with all the rain we are going to get.

Arkin is definitely popular. Probably the one I see the most of in nurseries. My little Bell I picked up a few weeks back has shown some growth. So far so good.

Got my pots in. Ordered 10, they sent 11. Came in an Amazon box so probably one of the same sellers on there for cheaper on ebay. They're the same thickness as the American made 15 gal pot my wife got for her Avacado. I'm all for buying American made but I'm more for saving $175.

How come there isnt anybody ITT trying to grow kiwis? Are they super difficult?
