As usual this is extremely useful info. My experience with passionflower is limited to maypop which lives a bit longer and is used to dying back every year, but it will peter out after a while. So what I do is dig up root segments every year (just gently pull and wiggle loose a nice thick root) and pot those up in the winter. I’ve not yet had one that didn’t sprout in the spring, and they are good insurance
Maypop will act like it’s going to take over for a few years, then disappear

I've had some maypops that were actually pretty good. There is a guy somewhere in the US who is selectively breeding them to obtain best flavor. Most improvement efforts have focused on hybridizing maypop with passionfruit (to little success), but this guy is just saying "screw it we'll just make the best maypop possible." I'll try to find a link to his site.
Unfortunately, just like in sweet oranges and mandarins, it appears that the genes for good flavor in Passiflora are inversely proportionate to the genes for cold hardiness. The tougher it is regarding cold the worse it tastes.
ETA: I was wrong, Ralph Meier is in Switzerland and is hybridizing. There is another guy focusing on just maypop but I can't find it.

Anybody else have pineapple guava (feijoa) blooming?

Posted on 4/10/26 at 3:18 pm to Tigerlaff
Potted a Bell's Starfruit (thought i ordered an Arkin but guess thats what happens when drinking and buyinng), up potted my cattley guava, and potted my sapadillo.
Ignore the flower bed in the background. My wife gave up on keeping the bermuda out but still hasn't let me remove the bed.
Got Jimmy Buffet on the radio, just cracked the first beer. About to sand and repaint a pirogue I built a few years ago. Today has been a good day.
Eta: change of plans, making jambalaya. Still involves beer and music so I'm cool with that.

Hell yeah boss.
Just my opinion but I think you are going to be WAY happier with Bell than Arkin. Other stuff looking good too.
I get a sense of pride when I look at y'alls photos and think "man, that pot/soil/mulch setup looks exactly like mine.... oh wait."

All praise be to Gary. Kindly old Japanese American man from California with soothing baritone voice inadvertently starts container tropical fruit movement in south Louisiana.

Been a busy week; but, we’re back in the saddle again. Digging holes and playing in the dirt.
The January and February freeze really put a beating on our mango trees. We lost over a dozen trees in total. We said that once we returned from Spring Break we’d make a decision whether to try all over again or not.
Turns out; growing mangoes is a disease and you just can’t stop. So we took what we learned over the previous few years and got after it again. The trees are surprisingly scarce as much of the State got wiped out.
Mango Row Version 2.0 is just about done…

You actually upgraded significantly. Be sure to drink while tropical fruit tree shopping from now on. It’s clearly in your own best interest. LOL..

Gotta be honest, this is the first time it's worked out in my favor.

The next phase is fine rum to go with your new equatorial paradise.

Ive got a couple but Im more of a tequila/whiskey man. Always have been.
We have a rum made down here, Siesta Key Rum, that is not bad. I have a few different bottles. Have a nice bottle of dark rum a client brought me back from over seas thats not bad.
Been sippin on some Don Julio Rosado lately. Really like that.

My brother in Christ I'm about to change your life. All that garbage you have been told to call rum is caramel colored water with added sugar. Start with Appleton 12 year old from Jamaica. You can get it at any decent liquor store. If you like it, come back to this thread and I'll set you on the path. I spent $160 on a Hampden Estate Great House last month.
