So I ended up ordering and (luckily) getting a Shirinui (aka Sumo Orange) budwood stick from the CCCP.

Are they back?

lost the 2 remaining Reed avocados that were on my tree last week while I was gone. They were marble sized, but I guess tree wasn’t happy and aborted them. Another year with no fruit :( oh well. Potted avocado trees look beautiful, so maybe that’s the way I go instead of dealing with the in ground plants.

You're doing better than me. Mine only has two leaves left on it.

Man you are doing some pretty advanced grafting. That's awesome. I only do the cleft and whip and tongue.

Glad you got to try a Nam Doc. They are good. They are far superior to any supermarket mango you are likely to find anywhere. And in my opinion, Nam Doc is on the low end of mango cultivars. Gives you an idea for what is out there.

Using some banana leaves to wrap pulled pork today.

I let the temp get up to 160 then wrapped. Will pull off when IT is 203.

I greatly overestimated how much string id need.

I ended up day drunk and didnt take any when I unwrapped it. We probably wouldn't have been able to tell a different if we'd used butcher paper but it was fun to be able to go grab some big arse leaves. My wife made sourdough Hawaiian rolls for it. I grilled some fresh pineapple to top the sandwich with. No complaints. Everybody enjoyed it.

A couple pics from the grove…

I’ve had one of the mango survivors of the February freeze that’s really impressed. I gave Zill P-22 a pretty significant pruning to remove all the damage back in mid-March. It’s since recovered and is twice the size it was before the freeze. It may give me a fruit or two. First pic; immediately post freeze. Second pic; today…

Namwah banana has recovered. Not putting on fruit yet though.

We will have avocados this year. Brogdon looks good and wasn’t even phased by the freeze. Unfortunately; Simmonds died during the freeze and was replaced by Super Hass. I’ve added Oro Negro and I’m considering adding a Lula as well.

The little Pickering I planted after the freeze is holding onto a few. I allowed one panicle on the new big Sweet Tart tree I planted to hold fruit. Surprisingly; it’s held on and they are developing well.

No pics Wiltz. Anyone else see them?

My potted cecilove mango rehab project took its topping cut well and is on its way to branching out. I really like this exact part of the process. It's the jumping off point for a years long effort shaped by my hand. This tiny subtropical tree doesn't know it, but it's about to be intentionally sculpted into something beautiful in a climate far too harsh for it to survive on its own. But it won't just survive. Absent freak accidents that overcome my built-in safety redundancies, it's going to thrive and in return give me experiences that no one within 600+ miles of me has had. Not a single ancestor in my entire lineage has ever eaten a Cecilove mango and I'm going to be the first. I'm not making some sublime claim fraught with deeper meaning; it's just freaking cool!

First Orange Sherbet ripe from Serendib Farms. It's such a top tier mango that I forgot to take a photo of the flesh and ran to share it with the family. Last night I had a perfectly ripe Ataulfo (the yellow "honey" or "champagne" mango you find at the store) and it was a very very good mango. Orange Sherbet blows it out of the water. It's hard to believe a fruit can be that good. Consistent with last year, I have to say OS is in my top 3 of all time.

Also had a few jaboticabas that the birds missed.

3 generations of Musa Truly Tiny banana. On the left is a fully mature tree that will flower any day now. On the right is a pup separated today that came out with plenty of roots.

Up potted the true Veinte Cohol into a 22g. Since bananas die after fruiting I do not give them the premium soil treatment. They get cactus/citrus mix with plenty of perlite and sand added in, then compost and high potassium fertilizer on top. The sand is actually very important not just for drainage but for weight. Bananas in big pots get very top heavy and will blow over.

And that's enough for a Sunday. Best kind of beer is a post yard work beer.

how much shade are those trees getting? I’m thinking I might build a shade over my patch it’s pretty much all day full sun, it can get pretty intense on super hot days.

something like a pipe gable frame I could also use as a cover in winter

Cccp is the California clonal citrus program. It’s budwood that’s sold with known genetics and HLB free. It’s grown in hothouses with no bugs able to enter. Its only job is to make budwood.

No guarantees on my grafts. Could be throwing 75$ down the drain lol. But citrus seems more forgiving than other hardwood grafts. I think I finally understand the concept of cambium matching.

I do think I want a truly tiny banana. That looks reasonable to add.

I will say this, I have a bunch of other deciduous fruit trees in my yard, and they all are annoying. Seem to require more work, they have more disease and fungal pressure than anything. Aphids on everything.

This super el nino killing us with humidity!

Half day plus. Bananas are an understory jungle plant. They look best when they get partial sun and are sheltered by other trees. They stay dark green and the leaves stay pretty and intact.

Out in the open they can sometimes get scorched by 100+ temps if not well watered and winds will rip up the leaves.

But bananas (except the variegated ones) will absolutely take full sun here and they will unequivocally fruit best in full sun. The varieties you bought are all dessert bananas except the Orinoco. I'd give them as much sun as possible.

If you have an area where you just want big pretty green foliage, get Musa Basjoo. Mine was evergreen through the winter.

Can I get an Amen? Hallelujah. I'm being totally serious when I say this: it is easier for me to grow guavas, mangos, and jaboticaba in 9a South Louisiana than it is to grow stone fruit. The disease and pest pressure is worse than winter.

Started an air layer of my prosciutto unknown fig. Branch started dragging on the ground after heavy rain so time to do something with it. Too good a fig to just prune it off. It's a little late in the season for air layering but it would be awesome if I can get a whole new instant tree.

Nice, they have some great varieties. I'm still working through my 10lbs of orange sherbet then next will be a box of Pickering.
