It's the smart key. Is this something that only the dealership can program or can I just get replacement fob and have a locksmith come to my house and program. Trying to avoid having to pay a tow to a dealership.

Check your auto insurance & see if you have road side assistance. That may pay the tow charge.

Most locksmiths will come to you and reprogram a new key. They usually get it from the dealer so it would be somewhat of a passthrough cost. Just have a locksmith drive out and do it for you.

not gonna happen, towing it cannot be avoided
they have to have the truck to program the key to it
this is why you ALWAYS make sure you have a spare key saved somewhere

my niece bought a car with only 1 key
she threw a fit when i insisted she go get another key made
key cost $300 (for a fricking volvo)
programming was another $225
she was pissed at me for a whole year, right up until she lost her keys, and i had to bring her the spare key.
thankfully she found her keys a couple days later so she didnt have to pay for another key

I bought a car for my kid a number of years ago, it only had (1) key - first thing I did was to go get a spare key for it - you just never know!

Nissan charges almost $500 for a new key fob. It's all a racket.

Lost the only smart key I had for my 2001 beater Jeep Wrangler. Dealer wanted $400 and it would be there for at least a week. Trailered it to a local locksmith shop and was one the road with a new key in 45 minutes for $225, and that included a second "non smart" key.

I bought a 2013 Honda Accord with one key. Wife locked it in the car. We needed another key anyway, so I called a church friend who is a locksmith (a real locksmith who has a business). He came and got me in the car for free as long as a purchased a spare key.
Took him 10 min to look up the vin, get the pinout, cut the key and reprogram it to the car. He did need access to the car to do it. $225 but that's a deal from friend to friend I'm sure.
I would call a locksmith and just see. I'd much rather have them come and do it right than have to tow it and have the stealership screw it up. The locksmith should know right away if they can do it or not.

Pop-A-Lock can do it. Their prices have gone up since I first used them. They cut a key and programmed it to my Mustang for $50, back in 2014, and they also deleted all the other keys in the car's memory. The Stealership wanted $350 for the key, programmed. The next time I used them was for my Dad's Toyota Venza, in 2019. He had lost his spare keys. This time is was $150. I don't know what they'd charge today, but they do have a full service rolling Locksmith that will come to your house and do it right there on your driveway. They can also do smart locks, etc. for your house. They also had a key blank for my '74 TR6, and cut a new key for 5 bucks.
