I’ve never done this myself but kind of feel like giving it a try this year. I have a Toro push mower. Is there anything I should do besides oil, air filter and blades?

Also any tips would be appreciated. I think I’m just gonna watch some YouTube videos and go from there.

You can change your plug I guess.

You should figure out how to remove the carb bowl and clean the jet. It’s a really simple task but I’ve had to do mine a couple times.

I have a toro recycler.

Sounds like you have the basics covered.

Congratulations on tackling it yourself.

If it's self propelled, change the belt. They'll stretch and start slipping over time.

After a couple of videos I don’t see any problem doing the oil and blade. The only thing I’m worried about is the carb but I’ll do a little research on that as well.

If it’s running fine no need to fool with the carb.

Not really much you could do to mess it up. Take it off, spray it down real good with carb cleaner and put it back on. If it is running fine don't mess with the screws and it should be fine.

I have the same mower. I just change the oil, air filter and plug once per year. If you want you can remove the carb and clean it. They make a little kit that has everything you need.

I got 13 years out of my last Toro and I only got rid of it because the body rusted due to a leak in a shed at my old house. All I ever did was the maintenance I mentioned. You can usually buy those kits at HD, Lowes or the local hardware store too.

I took it to a shop last year and they kept it for a month. After watching a couple of how to videos I’m kicking myself.

My RWD Toro is 15 years old and still using the original drive belt. That's not a big wear item.

I have a Honda that’s 7 years old. Been changing the oil and air filter annually. Changed the blades 2 years ago. Might go ahead and replace the plug and belt this year. Still runs like a champ.

I've had a Craftsman 6.5hp Briggs & Stratton since '95. Starts first pull most times. Since moving back to Louisiana it has been through jungle warfare. Still ticking! I just cleaned it and replaced air filter, muffler, spark plug, blade, and changed oil (first time ever). Runs like a champ.

Are you planning to just sharpen the blade or change it out completely?

If sharpening it, just make sure it is balanced before re-installing it back on the mower. They make a cone shaped gizmo that you put the blade on that goes through the center hole where it bolts back to the crankshaft and you want to make sure the blade looks level when on it.

If it tilts to one side, you need to remove a bit more metal off that side to even it out so the blade sits level.

This is correct. If it stretches a little where you notice it you could always adjust the cable on the handle. 7/16 nut. Just loosen it and move the cable either up or down to get the desired results you need

Not much to do to the motor other than what's been noted.
However, every 2 years, I do gradually add about 2 oz. of Sea Foam in the carb, let it run until the smoke ends.
When the engine is cool, swap out the old spark plug.

Put some Sea Foam is the gasoline every once in a while. It cleans out the jets in the carb.

This. Every spring run some foam in the gas. Change the plugs after and start a new season of cutting.
