I pay for pest control through Orkin, but we still get live, active roaches in the house. Probably about once a week we’ll see them in the kitchen. More rare in the other parts of the house.

They usually die eventually if we don’t kill them first. Sometimes not.

Orkin doesn’t spray inside the house.

What steps can I take to ensure that the large, nasty frickers rarely, if ever, get inside? We live in a wooded area. I can burn the forest down if needed.

There is nothing that you can do to 100% prevent them from getting in. The spray should make it to where they die after some period of time, which it sounds like they do. You should call the Orkin people and let them know on their next visit you want them to spray on the inside as well. It still won't keep them out completely, but should help speed along their death once they're inside.

They have a company called Barber Laboratories located in Harahan that I've used in the past to get concentrate insecticides from, along with Boric Acid and another small container of a caulk-like substance to be placed in the cabinets.

When I moved into my current house in 92 it had been closed up for months and those small German cockroaches, along with the much larger common ones were taking up residence.

I sprayed, used a gadget to get the Boric Acid powder sprayed around all electrical outlets and switches after I removed the covers and the caulk-like stuff was applied sparingly inside the cabinets along the inner edges of the face frames.

They vanished in just a few days and I don't think I've had 20 roaches since then, and that was 30 years ago now.

I do spray my downstairs woodworking shop and the man-cave a couple times a year, but haven't sprayed the 2nd floor main living quarters in so long I can't remember the last time I did it.

Spray Suspend insecticide (deltamethrin) under sink, lavatories, behind refrigerator, etc along baseboards in house, you can DYI this. No smell to this product. Should last 3 months, before re-spray. needed. .

I just sprayed some an hour ago in my storage shed - dead roaches already.

Anything you can use to spray around the perimeter similar to Termidor for termites? Recently had some drainage work done around the house and seeing an uptick. Want to put something down before we lay the new sod; especially now that we're seeing an uptick in new roaches (been 1 1/2 months since last qtr spray)

You had a nest inside before orkin started treating. Wait I would do is throw insect growth regulators under the stove and fridge. Put some insect glue traps near sources of water to see if there are any there.

I use a can of Bengal if I see bugs in the house (excluding spiders).

It'll knock them out.

I believe many posters on here praise the efficacy spraying bifenthrin around the exterior perimeter of houses for roach and other household insect control. Talstar is well know brand name, and there are other brand names containing the same active ingredient. It is a good idea to rotate insecticide chemistries with sequential sprays to mitigate insect resistance to pesticides you are using. Suspend (deltamethrin) another that can be sprayed outside along the exterior perimeter.

Bifen IT @ domyownpestcontrol

Get some of this. Mix it 1 ounce to 1 gallon in a pump up sprayer and spray your baseboards, under the sink, behind fridge, etc. Once it dries it is pet and kid safe. You can spray around the outside of your house too, around the foundation, in the weep holes, about 3 feet out in the yard. I wouldn't pay Orkin for something like this.

There are also many other great products on this site. Suspend Polyzone is another one I use. I try to rotate my sprays. Mix in an IGR as well and you will knock them out.

Every homeowner should own a 1 gallon sprayer and either Talstar, suspend, or a common commercial bug killer. These kill roaches, ants, mosquitos, flies, silvertails, etc. Spray the inside of your house around your baseboards every 2 months. Most of them have a 90 day residual which means they stop working at about 90 days. Spray every 2 months and you are good to go.

Put the sprayer on a very tight pattern and low pressure and just put a bead around the bottom of your baseboards around as much of your perimeter of your house as you can. Then shoot behind appliances, toilets, and inside any cabinets with plumbing. Turn the nozzle onto a sprayer and spray a 1-2ft wide pattern around the bottom of your house and the first foot or so of your yard. For mosquitos and flies you can then spray your shrubs, around your windows/ screens, etc.

That's a better job then 99% of pest control companies will do. It takes me 10-20 mins to do this for my 2200 sq ft house.

We get big roaches almost every time it rains hard. We spray a barrier spray regularly so they die if we don't kill them but they still get in. As long as you don't have them breeding and you aren't seeing baby roaches I don't think there is much more you can do in south Louisiana, Bugs are going to get in, you just don't want them living, breeding and eating your house!
