I have a coop with no door. We put some hay in there for them to nest in. Do I need to worry about them making it through low temperatures or a freeze? This is my first time having chickens.

I just had a talk with my daughter about this topic and the new chicken coop they are building. She lives in Vermont and it can get down to zero there.

She says that chickens do just fine when it gets very cold without needing any kind of heat in the chicken coop.

While this is true, chickens with large combs are susceptible to frostbite.

Idk where you are but if you are anywhere in the south, they will be fine. As long as they are sheltered from the wind, their feathers will take care of them.

If you have real cold temps (single digits and below) you could get a flap like someone else said. They would be kept warm with the buildup of body heat in the coop.

Also, chickens don't like to sleep on the ground or hay. They like to roost off the ground. Get a couple of 1x1 and run them across the coop a foot or 2 off the ground. They will bunch up together. It is also better because chickens will poop out 75% of their waste while sleeping.

If you're worried about cold, use 2x4 with 4 horizontal. It makes them sleep on their toes and they won't be frost bitten.

heating lamp if you are really worried.

Never worried about the big chickens in the cold in South LA. Just keep them protected from the wind.

Chicks same thing, protected from wind and for sure heating lamp.

In Memphis, so a little colder that there but all I do with mine is keep a heat lamp on their water so it doesn't freeze.

The main thing with adult chickens is to give them a place to roost that is out of the wind. Do not keep a light on all night. They have incredible eyesight and can see Infrared and need darkness to sleep. If you're in the South, then you really don't need to worry about your chickens being cold.

They will sit on their feet to keep their toes warm at night. And during the day need some sort of wind break during the winter if you aren't free ranging them.

We free range all year and the chickens have pretty good ways to take care of themselves when out. If you have young ones that don't have adult feathers, then you need to warm them, but should be already

Chickens do fine in our weather here in la. however my wife wont accept that so I bought a couple brooder/heater plates from TSC and hung them in the coop. If you put them on the heater setting it takes the edge off. Shes happy now and now I dont have to argue with her.

Depends on where you are located, what kind of shelter you have, how many chickens, etc.

No need to worry about them if it does not get below about 20 degrees….you have to remember that they literally have a down coat on all of the time. When they get cold, they just puff up their feathers and they instantly have more insulation. Just be sure to feed them a little extra, because they burn more calories trying to keep warm.

We put a heat lamp in. Ours are in a converted metal shed. They really will be fine without it, but it makes me feel better when the temps get around freezing.

I built a small ladder to lean up against the wall for them to roost on. They are appreciative.
