I agree with craw. 100% st aug. I have never met anyone that can visually tell the difference between floratam, palmetto, Raleigh, etc. I certainly can’t and I won’t even attempt to. Floratam is a joint venture between Texas A&M and the university of Florida. Hence the name floratam. It is chinch bug resistant but not very cold tolerant

Also to follow up on what craw said. If the sod was installed from a local company it probably wasn’t floratam

What can I use to kill poa annua ? I know the heat will kill it, but I want to knock it out before that. I have a Bermuda lawn.

If your bermuda is greening up you cannot use certainty/atrazine because atrazine will damage your bermuda. You'll have to use monument.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. I emailed the pics to my local LSU Ag Center agent and this was her reply:

I had to lean on our turf specialist for help but he said you have a mixture of St. Augustine, centipede, and carpet grass. He highly doubts it is Floratam because no sod farmers in a tri-state area are growing it.

This is a good PSA reminder to everyone in each state that you can use your land-grant university parish/county extension agent for assistance in such matters - that is their job and you will usually get a quick response, and in cases where the county agent may not know the answer, they will obtain the assistance of a research/extension specialist on main campus as in this case. I’m sure Dr Ron Strahan was the specialist she forwarded the photos to. Your state and federal taxes pay for this, so use the services where appropriate.

That being said, is now still a good time to spray the infamous winter weed cocktail, or is it too late?

I just sprayed mine this past Sunday so I'd think you're still good to go.... I plan to do a follow up spray in a couple weeks

I know we've discussed lawn cutting and when is a good/bad time to put down the cocktail, but I can't find it anywhere.
I want to put a 2nd application this weekend, but the weeds are getting long and I'd like to cut it. Should I:
1) Cut now and spray in 2 days or
2) Spray now and cut in a 2 days?

A fully mature weed is harder to kill. You need a weed to actively be growing to get good control of it. If you have fully mature weeds I would cut and spray. If you have weeds aren't fully mature I would spray and then cut.

How important was the Atrazine? I had some WFZ + surfactant and went ahead and used that.

Yep, thanks for the help

Atrazine is a pre/post emergent and mainly for grassy weeds. You basically just took care of the broadleafs which might be all you have anyway.

Man, idk about y’all but after doing the pre emergent and spraying the crabgrass and weeds, my yard looks like shite. Definitely killed the weeds, but it killed a decent amount of my st aug as well
Posted on 3/16/20 at 4:31 pm to PapaPogey
Then something else happened. Over applied, over mixed or fungus.

Ronk, you have any insight on what the hell happened in my back yard? I reseeded last year with a hybrid Bermuda and it was rolling along really nicely. It looks like it hasn’t come out of dormancy yet, I sprayed some 2-4d to kill the clover about three weeks ago. You can see the common Bermuda (and lots of POA annua) greening up but nothing from the hybrid.

Did you apply a pre em last year and did you spray any atrazine on your lawn? What was the temperature when you sprayed the 24-d and was it mixed with anything?
Posted on 3/16/20 at 6:46 pm to PapaPogey
All are a possibility. Am I just screwed or what?
Posted on 3/16/20 at 7:09 pm to ronk
No preemergent, no atrazine or anything mixed and sprayed when it was probably between 50-60 degrees.
