Is it time for pre emergent in South LA?
I’ve always heard mid February. I put down pre emerg for the first time last fall so I want to keep it going for the spring/summer

LINK

I could be wrong but I thought it was the end of the month. Any reason that it would be better now or within a week being i won't have time tommorow?

Where are you located? I contacted Dr Ron Strahan, professor and weed control specialist with the LSU AgCenter last week on this and he recommended to put it out early February in the Baton Rouge area because of the unusual warm winter this year. So if you’re near this latitude or south I’d put it out this week, if further north, like a north LA latitude, perhaps you can wait to mid-Feb. Better to err on the side of putting it out early.

I'm up in West Monroe and asked him the same question, he recommended mid-Feb for up here.

That makes sense. I'm gonna put down some prodiamine this week.

CrawDude - Thanks for the heads up here! I plan to put some out before the rain later this week (Lafayette area). You've been spot on in these threads. I laid down pre-emergent ~ 1 yr ago and there is a significant decrease in the amount of weeds this year compared to last.

I’m in the BR area... I had planned to wait a couple of more weeks but sounds like sooner would be better

Yep - the warm winter is moving up the recommended application dates. I’ll be applying granular pre-emergent tomorrow plus spraying a few weeds that escaped the fall application of pre-emergent.

I just put down my prodiamine. I would use dithyopir too but it's pretty pricey stuff.

I’ve been using Dimension (dithopyr), many others use prodamine (Barricade). I’ll be using some of both this spring. Both are excellent. Dimension will kill young crabgrass that may have already sprouted, and I think Prodiamine has a longer residual effect before it dissipates. .

If you are in Baton Rouge Site One Landscaping Supply in the Industrialplex has these products at excellent pricing, and Cleggs, Louisiana Nursery, some hardware stores carry them as well.

Based on a discussion on this site a year ago, I went to Lowe's and bought LINK. At ~$25 for 50 lbs, it seems like a good deal and so far has done a good job for me.

Has anyone had much luck with the roundup landscape weed preventer? I’m thinking about applying it to my flowerbeds and yard unless that seems like a stupid idea.

I’ve been fighting a losing battle in my yard for 2 years now. I was busy and missed my shot at pre-emerge before the rain set in in the fall so now it looks horrid. I’m going to mow and put down Atrazine and MSMA this week

That product is the dithiopyr (=Dimension) and that is an excellent price - comparable in price to the 50 lb bags of the LESCO brand of the same formulation I’ve been using, in fact maybe a few $ per bag cheaper. Don’t recall seeing at Lowe’s in BR - I’ll need to look.

I used it once and it worked well. Last fall I used prodiamine for the first time and haven’t had a weed since. I recommend prodiamine over roundup, but if that’s what you have it should work just fine.

Probably a stupid question, but when folks say they’re using prodiamine, can someone link to what exactly you’re buying for your yard?
