In need of new vacuum

We had the shark navigator freestyle and liked it but the battery died after about 1 ½ years and it didn’t work well on carpet (was great for the hardwood floors) and super convenient with it being battery powered
Any recs for a new one?
Need one that can vacuum carpet well and can handle long dog hair (golden retriever) but doesn’t have to be battery powered. TIA

Hard surfaces? Stairs? On-board attachments? Before you do something dumb and spend money on a Dyson (which will inevitably be suggested multiple times in your thread), look into a Sanitaire commercial upright. The multi-surface model can be found for under $400.

Why is a dyson dumb when you recommended a $400 vacuum?

Because a $400 Dyson is a POS, the one I recommend will outlast you.

Get a Miele canister vacuum. I have one and it works on every type of surface. It won't be cheap but you will never regret owning it.

I went through 3-4 vacuums over a 2 year span before getting a dyson for around $350 8 years ago. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

We have a Dyson and as long as you're good at taking it apart and cleaning all the areas out from time to time it's been pretty solid. Now how often is "time to time"...well every single time I take it out...so it can be a hassle. It does the job until it doesn't. The hose design on the Animal from the floor unit up to the canister sucks. Too many 90 degree bends where things like pine needles from Christmas trees can get caught. I'm sure if you want to sweep your carpets first and pick up the bigger stuff you'll be fine. It's great for picking up dust and dog hair. Also when emptying the canister...be prepared to get dirty, if you plan on cleaning out the canister the right way. I hate canisters and they've never made one that is easy to empty without getting dirty yourself.

Came here with this question a couple weeks ago and went with the Shark Navigator. It works well.

I have a shark (corded) and that thing is awesome. You can get them for about $125-$150.

Honest question, do you ever vacuum yourself?
One of the reason's Dyson's are popular is because they are very light and for the most part have very good suction. Parts are also very affordable and very easy to find. Bag less while it can be messy is still much better than bagged. One less thing to buy and keep on hand. The Dyson ball animal 2's suction is absurd on thicker carpet it can be hard to actually remove it from the floor.
I'm no Dyson fanboy. But you showed us a commercial vacuum that weighs probably 17-20 lbs and requires a bag. This is something a manager of a building or hotel would buy for his housekeepers. Not something you buy for your house. Bring that thing home to your wife and ask her to use it and she will likely kick you out of the house for the night.

Yes.

Because they are mostly cheap plastic and suction is less important in a vacuum than CFM and agitation.

Better how? Less capacity, less filtration, more mess is better to you?

My 20+ year-old Kirby pulls up any carpet and with rugs there's a switch that will cut down the power so it doesn't drag the rug from the floor under it. Your Dyson will never do that because it can't move half the air volume of a Kirby or any high-quality vacuum for that matter.

You're just clueless in general.

No, my fiancée knows what high-quality is and isn't some retard that buys into marketing wank. With her pathology Ph.D. she'd probably appreciate the fact it's cleaner and does a better job catching dust than your Dyson too. Do yourself a huge favor and go talk to somebody at you local vacuum sales/service shop and let them explain to you why Dyson is garbage. They will show you the best Dyson model and it will be outperformed by every mid-grade commercial vacuum they have on the floor and cost less doing it.

I never said this wasn't the case. Its about weight for performance. Commercial is made of metal to last which is much heavier than plastic. No one gives a damn if a vacuum will last longer than 5 or so years if it weighs 20 lbs. I have a Dyson that is going on 9 years old. My parents also have a kirby that's over 20, guess which my mom would rather use?
Again, for home use its not about what vacuum lasts longest or has the best suction.
If you think Bagged is better and that's what everyone wants then you are ignorant. You may prefer it, but go into any store or look online and see what is for sale. Its ALMOST universally bagless. That's what the market prefers.
Commercial vacuums are not made for residential use and vice versa.

There's always Oreck Commercial XL, beats Dyson and weighs nothing. Also, my Kirby with the drive system is much easier to push around than a Dyson on carpets. Once again, you don't have a clue.

Maybe for people like you, those of us that don't like buying crap think otherwise.

You are the ignorant one here child. The market is loaded with stupid people like you too, just because the ignorant prefer bagless, doesn't mean it's actually better. Plus, bags are cheaper than extra filters, are easy to replace, last months.

Go to a vacuum store where you can try out different brands and models on different surfaces with food, pet hair, etc. I walked out with a Miele.

My miele is 10 years old and as awesome as the day I bought it!!

There is nothing better than a Kirby, commercial or residential, but they are just not worth the price.

This is very much debatable. I would personally prefer a bag as the filtering quality you get from bags is much better than bag less. It is almost the only choice if you have a house with severely allergic occupants.
