I was spraying 25 gallons of pesticide every three weeks and not really denting the mosquito population.

I bought a half dozen home depot buckets with lids. Drilled two 1.5 inch holes in each lid. Put about three inches of water in. Dropped a dunk in each. And put them all 50-150ft away from the house.

Three weeks in and no change. At six weeks in and I worked outside the other night with not a single mosquito bite.

12 dollars for six dunks...

I have been planning on doing the same thing. How big of a property?

Just seeing if I need to do less or more buckets

Got a picture of the holes in the lids? Are they spread out? Does it matter?

Imagine you're a mosquito and put them how you would like them to be.

I put 3 on the back of my property about 3 weeks ago and noticed a big change. I also dropped a bunch in the ditch behind my house that was holding water with this rain. I bought a 1/4 round stick at lowed and shoved into the middle of the ditch and dropped the dunk on the stick.

I also added some grass and stuff into the buckets, I read that the breakdown of the organic material attracts mosquitos. I also added a solar powered blue light onto the top of the lid. I read that mosquitos are attracted to it.

also the way I set mine up is I screwed a few small pieces of 3/4 pvc to give about a 3-4 inch space between the bucket and the lid. you dont want to have water pouring in during a rain from holes on the lid. You only want to add water as necessary, not having the water overflow out. You may want to look into that.

I'm only trying to manage 5 acres or so. If they are in the pasture, I don't give a shite

As for holes, I drilled in the center side by side so I can fit the dunks through. Not worried about the water really as my lids have no lip.

I have a residential normal size yard and I think if I did this I'd have to paint the buckets hunter green or something and hide in the corners of my landscaping. A bright orange or white bucket would stand out like crazy.

I ordered gray buckets to match my weathered fence.

Well, the mosquito dunks don’t contain any pesticide, so they don’t kill mosquitoes, only mosquito larvae.

What is the thought process here? Are we just preventing reproduction and letting the adults live out their normal life cycle?

each female mosquito can produce 1000-3000 eggs during their lifecycle.so if you keep destroying the eggs with the bacteria from the dunks you can really cut down on the population long term.

I have a 1/4 acre pond right behind my house and woods behind the pond. Before if I was by the woods in the evening fishing I would get torn up. I buy a 20 pack of dunks from amazon and throw them all in there. No more mosquitos. I do that about every two months during the summer.

My yard is terrible with mosquitoes. I did a thorough inspection to eliminate all of the tiniest traps of standing water and no difference was had. My neighbors moved out and I peeked over their fence to see a small in ground “pond” with grass and stagnant water.

So I was excited assuming new owners would obviously remove it. And yet there it remains…

I have had mosquito abatement come out to my house a couple times over the years and verify that my yard is not the source of the problem.

I dont know if setting up dunks in my yard would help or not. Obviously they will just keep successfully breeding right next door.

Pitch a few dunks over the fence into their pond every ither month. It'll help by August.

I've tossed around the idea of burying 35 gal plastic drums around the property and stocking them with mosquito fish. When a female goes to lay her eggs boom, her and her 200 young'uns are in the belly of a minnow.
