in ground gunite pool.
standard kidney bean shape.
maybe 3.5 - 7 ft deep, tanning ledge
super blue plaster color.
have a 24" sheer descent waterfall feature with 2 additional spouts on each side.
currently running pump 8am-5:30pm
water temp running 91 deg this am.

Ive read about running pump at night.
Return Jet fountain sprayer/aerater thing.

just wondering if anyone had any tips that worked to lower temps?
(without spending $4-6K on a heater/chiller)

Your options are limited to what you've posted. Run the aerators at night. You'll lose a bit more to evaporation, but it'll cool it a couple of degrees. Not much you can do to cool it by 5 degrees even.

I got bored one day and did the math to figure out how much ice you'd have to add to the pool to reduce the temperature and it turned out to be an insane amount of ice.

Spend the money on a chiller. I have one and my pool is at 86-87 all the time and I love it.

I'm pricing pool chillers right now, they are not cheap and hearing mixed reviews. My water was 94 degrees this weekend

I shudder to even ask, but: what's it cost to run?

Pool waterfalls/fountain/sprayers help, but they have to be run overnight when air temps are lower to really make a difference.

From what I'm learning online only a dollar a day.

you would suggest in addition to the daytime run time? or just at night?

(or maybe the night before we know we will be using the pool the next day?)

I thought it's needed to circulate water in the daytime/sun to help prevent the algae growth...

I run my heater and chiller from March/April to November and it’s not enough to really notice. I fired it up back in February when it got into the 80’s and we swam for a week.

My electric bill due in July is $260. That’s a 3500 sqft home with 3 AC units, heater chiller, and Tesla charging.

If you want a pool to cool down you need to expose the water to cooler air by some means.

By running the fountain or sprayer in the night air it cools down the water because the ambient temp is lower than it would be during the day.

Its cycling the water from lower in the pool that would take longer to cool down to the (relatively) colder surface temps.

Does this include the "fuel surcharge" or is this just the base electricity cost? Seems almost unrealistic in Baton Rouge.

Not sure what the fuel surcharge is but my electric was actually $280 not $260 this month and my gas bill was $45 or $50 and I ran my hot tub a good bit.

I have one of the return jet fountains and I think it helps a little. I also installed a large triangle sunshade that covers up to 1/4 of the pool in the absolute heat of the day. I believe that extra shade has helped keep the temp a few degrees cooler. It is certainly a nice getaway from the blaring sun, even while relaxing in the pool.

This is the best way to cool your pool without a chiller.

You can run those little return fountains and help a small bit if you run it at night.

Our first year with the pool was last year, I remember it getting really hot and not fun to be in about this time last year. But as we got thru like August, even though it was hot as hell, the pool became cooler. Any cloud cover or thunderstorms will cool my pool pretty significantly.

yeah, these stretches of 100F and no rain sure bring the water temps up. This weeks looks promising in terms of temps and rains.

Glacier Pool Chiller

About $3000. It will drop our pool temp 8-12 degrees in a couple days. Will hold it steady during the day and drops the temps at night. We have a darker plaster finish and it does the job well. The first summer we had the pool without a chiller. I said this is BS…so warm it defeated the purpose of having a pool! Bit the bullet and no regrets. Doesn’t cost much to run, just a small electric fan motor.

Had one installed 2 weeks ago. The kid’s friends complained that 84 degrees was too cold. Had to bump it up to 88 degrees this past weekend. it’s very enjoyable now.

Unsure what the electric bill will be as much as it i has to run to maintain the cooler temps.

Edit: i went with the Raypak heater/ chiller combo heat-pump.

I, too, have a chiller. Pool is roughly 15k gallons. Pool temp at 86°. Electric bill has not increased by much. Best investment I have made in my pool since installing.
