i feel like i've been in the matrix my whole life and never much paid attention to the tile work in buildings and restaurants.

now i notice EVERYTHING; the bullnose, silver/white metal edging material, sloppy placement, grout not wiped properly, tiles slapped up at angles and not smooth...sloppy corner & edge work filled in with pounds of grout to hide gaps..

can't believe i never noticed how much poor workmanship exists out there before

One of the drawbacks to DIY projects is you notice all your screw ups . I've done a lot of first time projects on my house and while they all come out pretty good for the most part, I never stop seeing the flaws and it makes me want to scrap it and start over. Only saving grace is nobody else notices it, so I just have to convince myself to get over it. Eventually I do.

It helps to start a new project so you get obsessed with your new flaws and forget about the old ones

i'm wired that way too. that ONE thing that is 'off' will drive me absolutely out of my mind over time.

Same, and it drive me up the wall. It's nothing too bad but I keep thinking "maybe i'll just tear it down and do it again now that I have more experience"

I feel that way about trim carpentry: all of the badly faced doors, baseboards, ceiling molding, etc makes me nuts.

Unless you call them on it, almost all contractors will do work that isn't high quality. They just don't have to most of the time, so they get used to it

I helped my dad put in wood floors when I was young and he was building our house and he told me the same damn thing.

Years later I put wood floors and tile in my first home and he was absolutely right! Other people will never notice, but you will always know.

Urinals are the worst for me. I stand there taking a leak and see all the horrible tile work on the wall. Makes me feel better about my own work.

Gas stations and fast food are the worst. Sometimes I wonder who the hell they hired to do the work.

I take that back, college bars are the worst.

I used to have the bad habit of actually showing people the flaws in my own work when they would come over, they bothered me that much. It took a lot of effort on my part to stop doing it...that's when I realized that most people never notice and only complimented the work.
But yeah...paint, tile, trim...all the things I did after the flood...I see work in some folks homes a lot worse than anything I did.

Yep. Trim is the worst for me. Do a fair amount yourself and you will notice it everywhere you go from then on, good or bad. I worked with a finish carpenter for a while years ago. He did great work and charged well for it. He and his crew would do all the trimwork in a home. They were damn near perfect because he demanded it. You just don't see that anymore with contractors just throwing it up just to get it done.
Working with that guy was the worst and the best thing I ever did for my own trim work. Haha

"Helping" the contractor will only lead him to tell you "what are you talking about? You helped me and should've noticed it while we were doing it! Warrant voided!"

Are you going to have to tear it out and start anew?

I'm not talking about my house. I'm talking about being in other places I notice everything about the tile now.

After working as a framer in college, everywhere I went I paid attention to how intricate/difficult the roof would be to deck.

Spent a summer laying sod on a landscape crew, and I would see the lines in the grass even if they weren't there, similar to being on a boat or a horse all day and then getting off and still feeling like you're on it.

When I did electrical I always looked to see if the outlets, switches, and plates fit correctly and square, and if the screws for the plates were straight up and down (something my boss was a stickler for), even when I went to the doctors office.

It all goes away after a while, when workin on my own house, there were a few tiles I messed up before they got a chance to set, I haven't noticed them in a few years, but thanks to this thread I'll likely notice them again.

I was in construction for years and know that feeling... I’ve been in auto manufacturing for about 17 years now... now it’s almost like hey nice truck “you may have a bolt stripped out because in noticed your door gap doesn’t look right....” but I don’t say anything, just snicker a little.

a guy joined our company who used to be a car and airplane mechanic and we were taking a trip one time for some training in another city and every car we passed he would comment on what was wrong with their car if he noticed a wheel doing anything odd on a passing vehicle.

it was fascinating for a while then annoying.
