I’m thinking about growing a golf green in the backyard. It sounds fun but I’m sure I’m overlooking a ton of work. Any advice for winter prep, cautionary tales of don’t do it, or words of encouragement to start. BTW, I’ve got no clue what I’m doing but have never let that stop me before. I tend to learn better on the fly after I’ve screwed up a few steps.

It requires a very expensive mower for one thing. You can't just cut that with your Home Depot brand walk behind.

ETA: Not sure why this caught a downvote when the people below that talk about the mower didn't. Closet hater I guess.

Requires mowing at a minimum of every other day. Good irrigation, weed control and drainage are all things you need to consider in the process. I looked into it, but I already have enough regular maintenance items on my list to add something like that. I decided when it's time, I'm just going to install a fake turf style of putting green.

From a putting perspective, I think you'd learn your greens pretty well and your make percentage would be higher on your green that wouldn't necessarily translate to the course. It would help with mechanics of putting but not necessarily speed and line reading. Just my $.02.

You’ll need a gas powered reel mower.
Something like a greensmaster.

Used will be 2-3k

It’s doable but it’s one hell of a commitment. There are several people on The Lawn Forum who maintain decent putting greens.

I’d imagine you’d be spraying a new round of PGR every 10-14 days to keep the grass as dense as possible (and of course to slow vertical growth).

This guy on Instagram and YouTube keeps a legitimate par 3 hole with an unbelievable green. I can’t imagine how much time he spends on it.

Here’s a more humble example from The Lawn Forum

There is a reason everyone is installing synthetic these days.

The challenge is going to be, how do I maintain really thick grass at .15 inch cut height?
You'll need a Bermuda hybrid lawn to start. Do you already have this?
Please do it so we can admire from afar

I did one out of perennial rye one winter. It was more of chipping green you'd say. I kept it at .25 with my greens mower. But, it was fun and a lot of work. Mowing all the time, Blowing leaves, top dressing with sand every month it seemed like.

The problem with synthetic is they dont hold shots. Not worth it if i cant chip and pitch to it.

My real grass green didnt hold shots well either. You really have to have a true pga subsurface and dense turf to hold the ball/check & spin.

I'm trying with Bermuda and a reel mower. Still trying to get it perfectly level. Haven't experimented with growth inhibitors or anything yet. Maybe next year.

I bought a greens mower. You can find some nice used ones for under $1500. My problem is that I cut my yard with mine now and now I need another one if I want to have a putting green.

Zoysia. I use a John Deere 220B at 5/8”. Best thing about zoysia is now when everyone in the neighborhood is brown I’m still green. But right now I’m cutting with rotary. I get my mower adjusted and sharpened every year. Usually takes a few weeks because the guy is so busy. I guess I need to figure out where to host pictures so I can share. Maybe next spring.

I have a friend's new reel mower sitting in my shop. I wish someone would take it off my hands! He decided his lawn was too small for it.

There is a FB group called Backyard Golf Greens. Some incredible examples about what is possible.
