I had the Ryobi push mower for about a week before the handle broke on it. It was easy to use but there's a week point and it cracked on a turn. Ended up with the Honda HRN and 3 years later am still glad the ryobi broke.

Honda, I have an HRN going on it's 7th season without a hitch. Honda is getting out of the mower business though, I stocked up on some OEM spare parts so I should be good for the next decade or so.

Just had a six year old Ryobi fail
Got a Honda

Hated the Ryobi for the past 3 or 4 years
Just not enough juice for leaves

You're going to love the zero maintenance of battery powered

Having just bought a self propelled EGO 4 days ago here is my assessment:

EGO ran one line in my backyard then the overheat light came on and the blades refused to start. Ended up having to pull my broken down super recycler out and wrestling it to get the yard done.

I was pissed. Today I brought it out of the garage fresh to do the front yard and upon putting the battery in, same thing happened with the temp. I hadn't even started it.

I clicked it on and off about 15x and it finally started then died about 20 feet away.

I was livid at this point and ready to throw the damn thing in the back of my truck and head to Lowe's but I gave it one last shot and lo and behold it fired right up and I mowed the entire front yard about 1/4 acre without a hitch. Part of the yard is an incline so I cranked up the self propelled to full speed and zoomed over the whole yard.

When I finished the battery still showed 3/5 green bars so I'm going to give it one more shot next week and try both front and back.

I'm going to hope the battery/temp thing was just a hiccup that sorted itself out.

I'll read up on the temp thing but Ziggy, I was in your shoes last week and was placing to get the HRX or HRN and on a whim got the ego instead.

In short, don't be so quick to dismiss the electric. I never thought I'd consider it but EGO is the closest thing to a Tesla on the electric tool market right now. Very well made electric products.

You can always try the electric and bring it back for the Honda if it doesn't meet your needs.

I'm still not certain I'm going to keep mine yet either but thought you would appreciate an honest assessment from someone with both at the moment.

Eta yes I love folding it and picking it up and putting in a corner of the garage. That heavy arse toro is just wasting space in my shed and would love to kick it to the curb if possible.

I’d have a difficult time picking the electric.

yep, im ok with cordless hedge trimmer, weed eater, or leaf blower, but thats it. lawnmower needs to be gas, that electric lawnmower is only good if your yard is 30ftx30ft or smaller

Greenworks is the better buy. Less $ and steel deck

Two posts up CAD says he mowed 10 times that much yard without a problem.

CAD you may need to remove and firmly reinsert battery when that happens

I love electric but if you have 1/2 an acre you will probably need two of the larger batteries of whichever batteries you get. Gas might be your best bet. It would be better to get electric if you already have the same batteries available.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the battery lasted. Didn't even break a sweat and the yard was overgrown since I was dicking around looking for a mower.

I don't think people realize just how good these electric mowers have gotten.

I'm on 3/4 of an acre with some challenging areas in the back and I'll be very interested if I can finish the whole backyard (1/2 acre) by swapping one of my smaller batteries in if it runs out. Plus I'll get to stress test it either way.

Anyway, there's lots of string trimming to be done so even if I have to throw the battery on the supercharger I don't think I'll lose any time because it's a good 30 minutes weed, edge and blow which I have to do anyway.

I'll report back, warts and all.

I looked at that one at Costco but it was $499 which is same as what I paid and I'm already invested in the ego ecosystem that all uses the same battery so it made sense to me to get it.

I'm not going to clean a carburetor ever again, personally.

Greenworks 60v mower, weed eater, and blower with 3 batteries. 2 years running now and cuts an 11,000' sq ft lot no problem. 2 batteries for mower, weed eater and blower share one. Rinse and repeat.

If you've got a small lot it's foolish to skip on this technology. It's come a long way the last decade.

All the oil & gas baws in this board will downvote you out of anger. But yes, it is coming a long way and quickly.

If a battery loses 10% of it's original capacity, a 60 minute charge is now a 54 minute charge. Not a big deal.

This, as well.

Keep an open mind. I too was in the "electric mowers are stupid" category before doing a little research.

For long term reliability, which would you pick between an electric 40V Ryobi mower versus a Honda HRX gas powered cutting approximately 1/3 to 1/2 an acre?

If you're considering electric, then it's Ego that you want. I borrow my neighbor's Toro once a year to scalp my lawn because it drops lower and handles the task faster/better.

I mow about 2,000 sq ft and use the battery to mow, weed-eat and blow on one charge. It's quiet so I can mow as early as I want, I don't have to make last minute runs to the gas station or deal with anything that combustion engines require. It's virtually headache free. Ego has the best battery reliability of the electric stuff right now. When I'm done, I fold it up against the wall in the corner of the garage. I have zero regrets going on 3 years now.

I would probably go with a gas mower for anything larger than what I have. Of course if I had a yard as larger than mine, I would fill it with enough plants and flower beds that I could get by with electric.
