Need a new fridge and have always had a SxS. What are pros and cons of each?

I have a side by side and I frickin hate it. It feels like there's no fridge space and I lose stuff in the backs of shelves all the time. However, the ice maker works flawlessly and has for 6 years. French door refrigerators with ice dispensers in the door typically have more problems with the ice dispenser.

Yeah, that's what I've been reading. I do however like the fact that you can get a dual ice maker in the French Door. I know to stay away from Samsung, but what about LG?

We just got GE French door with dual ice makers. One in door and one in freezer… one of them is bound to mess up at one point so we wanted option of 2. It was a little loud at first so I tightened some screws on the back and it’s better.

^this.

We have the Bosch French door on top, freezer on bottom with the ice maker in the door since 2021. I’ve pulled it out of the cabinet and unplugged it to reset it bc the ice maker was geeking out at least 5x. Hind sight, I should’ve avoided the door ice dispenser and done an under counter ice maker when building.

We have a Whirlpool fridge (I apologize about previously posting in another thread about saying I had KitchenAid, forgot the brand). Old fridge was side by side Samsung that froze up numerous times and self-destructed the ice maker.

I get more use out of my freezer with all the stuff I buy from Costco, so I like the access of the side by side freeze. It also has a water dispenser that doesn't shut off when I hope the non-freezer side which is convenient. I do feel like you have to be much more organized with your fridge and that it would be so much easier to organize a French door and access things that aren't in the freezer. French doors force you to stack stuff on top of your freezer items.

Only EVER buy a Samsung phone or TV, nothing else. LG makes decent kitchen stuff, but I would spend the extra $$$ and buy Frigidaire/KitchenAid/Whirlpool/GE. LG can be hit or miss and you're less likely to replace the other brands that I mentioned sooner than an LG, no matter how you take care of it.

french door fridges are way more useful for food storage imo. I have had one with ice/water in door, and one with ice drawer in freezer and water inside the fridge. I haven't had a problem with either. 1 is GE, one was Fridgidaire. The ice in the door doesn't make much, but it works for us. As my kids get older, we will probably need another icemaker in second fridge or standalone. But it is nice being able to get ice in door. Also, the current fridge has water autofill, which i LOVE

French door all day if you are going to have a deep freezer. You're opening the fridge 10x as much as the freezer. The extra space/access to the fridge is so much better than a SxS.

I love the French door styling because I bake and cook a lot. I am able to put large trays in the fridge or freezer.

I hate that my fridge is an LG, though. HATE IT! LG compressors are shite. DO NOT get the in-door icemaker. You've been warned.

Couldn't do a SxS. We have a french door with 2 drawers. The top shallow drawer is a fridge and holds all our drinks. The lower deep drawer is the freezer. Love it. The ice maker in the door is basically useless though. It's a Samsung. Never had a single issue in 9 years other than the ice maker storage compartment freezing up. It's done that from day one. You aren't getting anything but crushed ice out of that thing. We don't use ice all that much though.

The best option for us was to get one of those units that can be a refrigerator or freezer. It’s a flip of a switch. We use it as a refrigerator. It is very roomy compared to any side by side or any other refrigerator/freezer.

We got an average size chest freezer for frozen things.

It feels like unlimited space compared to any normal refrigerator/freezer.

My wife was skeptical at first but wouldn’t have it any other way now.

As a bonus the total cost was about $1200 less than the refrigerator/freezer.

Sorry for the late reply. I can only speak to LG brand re the in-door icemaker. Nothing but problems! My sister and I have the same model with compressor dying after a surge or blackout. Have a friend who had the same issue. Google will tell you what's up.

Next Fridge I buy is going to have traditional style doors and the ice/water dispenser on the inside. I can open the door for ice.

So the internals have the water inside the fridge and the ice just dumps in the bottom freezer?

We went from French door Samsung with ice in the door to LG with freezer on the bottom. We love it. Ice comes from the freezer where it all should come from. After about the twentieth time of emptying my fridge because the stupid thing froze up in the back i took that Samsung to the curb and put it on Facebook and said come get it. Hated that thing.

What's wrong with external ice/water on a SxS? The ice is in the freezer and not the fridge like a French door.
