Deadbolts and Keyed Entry

When replacing deadbolts and keyed entry locks, it appears to me that the keys may be different for each set.
Is there a particular locksmith in town (BR area) that one would recommend to rekey the locks?
On average, what should I expect to pay?

get a kwikset smartkey lock. basically allows you to rekey to whatever key you want so all your locks can work with the same key

I can remember Lowe's doing it for free if you purchased the locks there. It's been a long time though

That was going to be my rec too. Depends on the locks and handles but might be just as cheap as using a locksmith

Any locksmith can do it, and the cost should be pretty reasonable. I had 3 locks changed to match a 4th lock earlier this year and plus a number of keys made and it was less than $200

I brought a loose deadbolt a couple years ago and had them key to an existing key. Think it was like $25. Other posters are correct Lowes/HD will rekey for you for free if you buy there.

Go to a place that does this type of thing and order them all keyed alike. They also usually have better options than the standard Kwikset/Schlage.
Builders Hardware in BR is an example of a store like this.
Off the shelf is nice at HD/Lowes if you need it right away and they can rekey them.

I did mine myself. It's really simple and I felt like James Bond while doing it. Just a matter of taking the cover off the lock pins and dropping the correct length pins in each hole.

I've always used Alford Safe & Lock. It looks like a place that time forgot on the inside, but they are good to deal with. I usually bring them my locks, but they will come out to you. Just a note... keyed doorknobs are useless. Just put a regular passage knob on the doors so it's one less lock you have to re-key. Keyed doorknobs are the reason everyone locks themselves out of their house.

I just paid 200 for 8 cylinders to be changed and I got 3 keys made.

I replaced my deadbolts with keyless electronic keypad type. Have had them for 3-4 years., They great, no worries about having keys, you can program temporary codes if someone needs one time access to the house. Very easy to install,

Kwikset has a code number on the back of the packaging. Match them up and the keys/locks are identical.
But SmartKey is the way to go.

Yep- it’s not that hard. You just have to be patient and have access to YouTube. The kits to rekey are very inexpensive online.

You can buy sets of deadbolts and keyed entry doorknobs that are keyed alike at any big box store.
When we built our house back in 2004 we bought a set for 5 doors.
1 key for the all the deadbolts, 1 key for all the entry knobs.
