I posted this on the Outdoor Board this morning, then realized this board may be a better location for the topic:

We are in the beginning stages of building a home and found out that we have to remove a large, mature cypress tree from the yard. I would rather it not go to waste. An arborist is coming this week to cut it down and leave it on the property. Ideally, we could get a couple of items made from the tree to put in our home (which won't be complete until December at earliest), with the leftover material being kept by the person doing the woodworking for us.

Is anyone here experienced in this sort of thing, or know of someone I can contact? We are in the Baton Rouge area.

Thanks!

Green cypress like that doesn’t have much value considering it takes a year or two to dry. Also, it won’t produce nearly as much usable lumber as you would think so the idea getting someone to make some pieces for you and then taking the left over as payment is far fetched. Considering the work that would be involved with hauling it off to mill it, or milling it on site, then sitting on it for a year or two while it dries or paying someone to kiln dry it and then finally spending countless hours building the things you want only to then be paid with some leftover lumber. It sucks to see mature trees like that go to waste but the only two likely outcomes I see are is you pay the arborist to dispose of it or maybe you can get lucky and someone with a mill will come take it off your hands for free and not charge you for the favor he’s actually doing you.

Well, add that to the list of things I have to buy when I hit the powerball.

So wait, are you saying there is no value in a mature harvested cypress tree? Makes no sense.

There’s value to it, but likely not enough to justify coming there for 1 tree.

You can probably pay a guy to come mill it then set the wood to dry for 2 years. Then make something from it once it’s dry

People always forget that the wood must be dried.

There is, but there's a lot of work to make it usable. I have a friend with a ton of it drying right now. Takes up a ton of space at his house and it's been well over a year that he's had it. Sweet deal where someone he knows cleared an entire yard of cypress and struck an agreement with a guy who had a mobile saw mill. I came in as the woodworker in the end. Honestly it took twice as long to go through the lumber since a lumber yard would have probably rejected a good bit of it. I also am not a fan of working with cypress after 2 projects. A bit to soft. I'm sure someone would interested, but its more to it.

Now a pricey wood like walnut or white oak, which comes at twice the price per BF.....then you have people more willing to deal.

All that labor for one single tree is why he’s said there’s little value.

There is a lot of wood I will spend the time cutting, stacking, stickering, covering, and weighting to air dry but cypress isn't one of them.
