I got a custom cabinet quote for a small bar in my house. They quoted me $7k for basically 3 lowers, 2 uppers, and the countertop. This seems absurd for what is essentially wood boxes. Has anyone ever tried the online build and design and installed them yourself? I'm considering going this route.

Need more details, but that sounds like a "I don't want to do it" price. Much more cost effective to bang out cabinets for a builder than do a small side project.

My daughter and her husband did it for their kitchen. Seems like it worked out ok. She did say the assemby part was pretty tedious.

You can buy the cabinet doors and have them mailed to you. Last custom cabinet guy I used bought all his doors online.

Can even have holes for the hinges bored into them.

They aren’t expensive either

Not sure where you’re located but if you’re in the BR area Norco Construction in Pville will build the doors for $50/ea. they’ll be poplar and look great. They’ll be predrilled for hinges. I’ve used them a few times and very satisfied.

Who did you get the quote from? Seems high but there are lots of variables that go into that price.

This may be a case of bid high because of how small the job is like another poster said.

Agreed. It highly depends on specs and product used. The last quote I got was $35k+ for kitchen, 7 uppers, 10 full size lowers, 5 shallow lowers, some organization slides and pantry. It did not including counter tops, backsplash or Oven Vent Hood.

What kind of countertops? How much for just the cabinets? Breaking down the costs would help us answer your question.

You also don't follow threads very well either.

Where are you located? I’ve been in the hardwood industry for over 30 years. I know every cabinet, door, and millwork shop in the south and a bunch of them nationally. I’m sure I can give you 5 other names of reputable craftsmen in your area to get quotes from. Look, the economy is slowing down on the residential side of the housing market. If that shop was busy they shot you a high quote. These ole baws whose shops are slow will give you a competitive price because they need to keep the shop busy because sweeping the floors isn’t profitable. I can even direct you to where to buy the material to save money because I sell the majority of the lumber distributors their import hardwood lumber. I’ve visited numerous cabinet factories and many of them built a quality cabinet. One in Wisconsin was like NASA. But if it were me I’d get some local good ole baw to knock that out for me at a price that is more reasonable. If something screws up a local guy will come repair it. Hell, doing business local isn’t a bad thing.
