My myrtles are covered in some black soot looking stuff that is getting all over everything in my flower beds under the trees. What is it and What’s the easiest way to get rid of it?

Anytime I've had Sooty Mold on my Crepes or Viburnums I've used a Fertilome Systemic Drench and sprayed the plant down with All Seasons Horticultural Oil which loosened the soot for the rain to wash off. They were always back to 90% clean after about 2 sprays of the oil.

Pressure wash the soot off first, then apply your herbicide

He doesn't want to kill the plant.

Reminds me of the RD Mercer bit where he called the extension service and said he killed his Christmas tree farm by applying herbicide, as their newsletter recommended, to kill beetles.

Try di-syston. Mix and pour at the base of the tree. Works through the root system.

The black soot is the waste from aphids. Treat for aphids and you will see your tree come back to life.

Is it treated through the roots as mentioned above or is it a spray on?

Imidacloprid is what you want - mix and pour in the soil around the base of the tree.

I had three CMs that got this and each was cured by one drench treatment (after the bark peeled the next year). I reapplied the next year just to be sure - they are all better than ever.

"Honey dew" from the tree - a defense mechanism, likely from the fuzzy, white bark scale and/or aphids.

This, but in the spring. Tree should be shedding leaves now, so the drench would be for nothing really. Wait until spring and apply drench as new leaves are sprouting.

I treat mine through the roots in the spring and no aphids all year long.

I never had any luck with the spray. I use Bioadvanced 12 month tree and shrub protect concentrate. You can spray some soapy water to clean the leaves to get a head start.
