How are y’all’s citrus and other fruit trees looking after the hard freeze in BR? I have 2 pear trees that are trying to bud out any day and a blood orange that dropped most of its leaves but seems to be fighting back.

Ruby red grapefruit and lemon tree are done for. Verdict is still out on the satsuma but I may replace it either way. I butchered it trying to prune years ago.

Orange tree dropped most of its leaves but bark was still green on my most recent check. I piled up the trunk with straw and leaves during the freeze, so it should have made it okay. But during the last big Freeze event we lost a year of production and a couple branches. It’s a big, old tree.

Meyer lemon tree looks awful but I scraped a branch today and was still very green so going to give it some time to make a comeback

Had a mandarin drop it's leaves but I'm not freaking out until we actually progress further into spring. The inside is still green so it is still alive. Hoping to see new buds and leaves soon.

One of my Hamlin oranges is in the same boat but still has some leaves left. My other Hamlin dropped some leaves as well but is already starting to put out new ones.

My satsumas did well and my lime tree of all things seems to be standing tall. All of the lower leaves are still a nice dark green and just the top leaves show any damage.

I had everything covered with moving blankets and then tarps on top. I also had Christmas lights wrapped around them to keep them warm, however I lost power on day 2 of the winter mess and didn't have any power to keep those lights going for the 4 days I was without electricity.

I'm in SELA. My lemon is in a pot and weathered the freeze inside. My satsuma shed probably 50% of its leaves but is already pushing out some new growth so I'm not concerned. Tree has only been in the ground for two years.

I'm glad this topic was brought up. I was just given an Improved Meyer Lemon and a Mexican Thornless Key Lime from one of my coworkers. He bought a bunch at Home Depot and then realized he had too many. His mistake, my gain.

My problem is I don't really want to put them in the ground just yet because I have a lot of work to do in my yard before I can plant them. So I was wondering if they'd do well in pots? If so, how big of a pot would I need?

Dropping dead leaves is a good sign. What’s not a good sign is holding on to dead leaves.

The lemon tree does okay in the pot. It's a Meyer and was panted the same time as I planted my satsuma (Owari) in the ground. The satsuma has done a lot better. It grows much faster and the trunk has gotten much thicker in the same amount of time compared to the lemon. The lemon had some pretty bad transplant shock so that may have set it back a bit. Even though it hasn't grown like the satsuma, it does produce a good bit of lemons. I probably got 30 off of it last year. That said, I probably got 80 satsumas off of the Owari.

I'm not sure how big my pot is from a volume standpoint, but it holds about 2 cubic feet of soil. If I had to guess it is probably a 15 gallon pot.

I guess I’ll try to grow them in pots and then hopefully transplant them next spring. It looks like lemons and limes are the least cold hardy of citrus trees, so I’ll definitely have to consider freeze protection once I get them in the ground.

You need a 20 gallon pot for optimal growth. Do yourself a favor and just order one of the sturdy black ZenHydro nursery pots and drill extra drainage holes in the bottom. Do not even bother with a flimsy home depot pot. It will chip and break when you try to move it.
