What's your argument then? If you're gonna come in here and half troll why don't you tell us a bit about your lawn?

I have no idea why you are reacting this way. My post was zero troll. Why is my lawn important? I loathe Bermuda anywhere but a golf course. I love centipede. I currently have a St. Aug yard. The posts re: proper Bermuda upkeep are well documented here. I have no desire to do it, and if someone else does, great for them. I am just expressing my shock that anyone would go through what it takes and would get rid of centipede. BTW, I have never actually known anyone with a Bermuda yard, and I could only lead anyone to exactly one in my community. That's probably got a lot to do with my constant amazement that anyone would do this.

Thanks for elaborating. I just thought a little context would be helpful to understand why you’re shocked to hear people recommend Bermuda over Centipede.

Bermuda isn’t terribly popular in Louisiana. Our contractors seem to go cheap on grass for new builds. Centipede. Which, in my opinion, looks just fine. I like the color and the texture. It just obviously doesn’t hold up well given how many Centipede lawns need a renovation this year.

There’s a lot more Bermuda from Birmingham to Charlotte in the wealthier more aesthetic suburban neighborhoods. Same for Dallas and Houston from what I can tell.

Every one is different.

I grew up with St. Aug and that is all I knew until I moved to Florida. I had a centipede lawn and it was hell to keep alive in a yard that was pure sand below 2". I started a transition to St. Aug while I was there but moved before it was complete. So in my own experience, I could never recommend Centipede just because it gave me so much trouble.

Now I live back in Louisiana, have P77 in the backyard and absolutely love it. My first couple of years I fertilized regularly and mowed twice a week which would count most people out just right there (and I don't really blame them). To me it is worth it to give my kids a sticker free backyard that bounces back fast after a waterslide is up all weekend and foot traffic. It also feels incredible walking on it barefoot. Many times when we have guests over we will have a line of shoes on the back porch because people just want to walk around on it.

The past couple of years I backed off on the maintenance due to a loaded schedule. I fertilized maybe once and went down to cutting once a week. The yard still looked great but obviously not as good as the first couple of years. Throughout the drought this past year I only watered 2-3 times and it all looked just fine which was really nice.

This year I won't be as busy and think I can take a more balanced approach. I'd also like to level out my yard a bit so I will want to push the grass a bit to fill in the spots when I bring in sand.

This is what I mean. A lot of people don't realize this and I am just making sure it's clear.

BTW, I am about to be 57 and have not once fertilized a lawn. Then again, I have always lived on Red River bottomland, so that may be the biggest difference.

You don’t have manipulate what he was trying to say. He fertilized and cut frequently so his lawn looked and felt amazing, not that it was a requirement.

He then went on to say that he backed off all of that and the lawn still looked great.

Wow I can’t believe I’m arguing on the Home and Garden board with someone who is

You made it look like the opposite of what he was stating. I think there's a word for that...

Annual fertilizing and once/week mowing is bare bones lawn maintenance for any respectable homeowner.
He did this, and said his bermuda lawn looked great as a result.

You implied that once he stopped doing multiple fert apps and 2x/week cutting his lawn went to shite.

edit: "good" to "great"

How? That's exactly what he said he was doing.

This is patently false.

I did no such thing.

So, what were you trying to say here if I misinterpreted your intention?

What do you mean?
A lot of people don't realize what?
I can promise you that nothing is clear...

We only know, based on previous posts, that you think Bermuda is too much trouble. Were you implying that one fertilizer application per year and weekend mowing is too much maintenance? Are you trying to warn the homeowner that this is what he'll have to do in order to enjoy great bermuda?

The fertilizer thing wasn't important to anything I said, as I have never once used fertilizer for my lawns. in fact, I have often hoped there would be an anti fertilizer.

The person I quoted said he regularly mowed twice per week. Once per week is only when he backed off.

There is no other way to take any of this.

Maybe you should stop giving recommendations about something you have zero experience with. Unless you’re trolling, then keep going. I’m entertained

I'd argue more people think that if you have bermuda, that the 2x mowing and regular fertilizing is a requirement. If you want a lawn like you see on thelawnforum.com then sure.

When I went down to single weekly cuts and almost no fertilizing, my only real complaint was the amount of clippings after a cut but overall it was a perfectly acceptable backyard lawn and probably looked better than 90% of the yards around me.

right, because stripping a living thing of essential nutrients would be great!

Maybe try not eating, and also pumping your stomach every day and see how long you survive.

So your entire point is to show that owners of Bermuda must cut their grass at least once per week?

And we are supposed to think this is excessive and high maitenance?

I gave no recommendations. Look, this topic is dear to you and you're mad-I get it. I mean, your user name is Bermuda. if you just stop being so emotional and read the words, you might calm down a little. Again, I was simply pointing out the maintenance. Not every one is up for that. If you continue to read more into it, it continues to be a you problem.

OK, we are not communicating. I was wrong about everything and all my comments should be deleted. Everyone should enjoy their lawns. I'm out.

When it rains a lot (historically this happens often) I really need to cut my St Aug about every 4-5 days.
