This is a more expensive option, but we used this on our cedar fence and its looks fantastic and is a permanent solution rather than having to stain every few years. Plenty of color options as well:

Arborcoat Exterior Stain

I left my cedar unstained for over a year, loved the natural color.

Stay away from Lowes, HD, etc.

Dod you have to clean the fence before staining?

I used this on a pergola I built a few years ago. It’s more red than the natural color of the Western Red Cedar I had but it looked great.

How do you clean the fence before applying? Also how do you get in the gaps between boards?

I never overthink the cleaning unless it’s really bad. I hit a few boards at a time with a soft scrub brush and just rinse with the hose.

I still prefer to stain by hand, and a nice brush will get between the boards easily. I sometimes use a stain pad and follow up with the brush in between.

30 Second Cleaner works really well if you need to clean it before staining. The wood will look brand new. If you go with a transparent stain, I’d definitely clean it first.

No such thing. I like Arborcoat, but you’ll eventually have to re-stain it.

I used both sponge and then bought a stain gun as well.

Both worked pretty well for getting around cracks and saturating most of my fence.

We just had our deck done with ready seal. It is what the painter recommended.
