Some of these plumbers live the lifestyle of a heart surgeon.

And that heart surgeon can’t do what the plumber did. Some folks are grossly overpaid. And it ain’t the plumber.

$450 is a lot for sure, I wouldn’t be happy, but it’s not completely outside of the unreasonable range. Most of them are about $200 for the service call and then $100-150/ hr after that. So I would expect about $300-350 for a legit 2 hour job. Now if it took them over 2 hours then sure that’s pretty close to being inline.

I recently had a plumber fix a grinder pump and it took them about 4 hours and my charge was $550 plus parts.

But those One Hour type of guys will rip you a new one for a basic call.

BIL is a licensed master plumber - told me most licensed plumbers in New Orleans area charge between $100 to $150 per hour in labor, depending on size of company (overhead) - and that was before the pandemic so I’m sure that has increased. With parts (though that might have been minimal), sounds to me the charge was pretty reasonable.

If you didn't want to do it yourself, then what he charged seems on the reasonable, but slightly high side.

I've done 2 supply water leaks in my days of homeownership and it's not a hard job outside of the digging to get to the pipe to even start your repair work.

Saw a picture of a plumbing truck in a city up north and on the side of the truck the guy had "Your shite is my bread and butter" on his drain cleaning truck.

Funny, but true and that, to me, is the worst part about doing plumbing work when you get involved with sewer work.

Let's see. I had 4 toilets rebuilt, hot water heater lines fixed and four hours time spent.

$1300.00

I'd say you got off real easy.

This guy was $150/hr. I know the local area well because of work I do. Usually they about $100 a hour. They came out same day here, mumbled some crap about Covid. But then they always come with a helper. They charge for that too.

Plumbing is a racket and they charge out the butt.

Basic plumbing isn’t rocket science. Do it yourself if you don’t like the price.

$450 for 2 hours of outside labor in an emergency situation isn't ridiculous. left it for another few days and you'd have paid more in a water bill.

it hurts, but it's not ridiculous.

i know enough to cut the water main, and how to do a quick gasket seal fix on a pipe and how to cut and use a shark bite when needed. beyond that and i'm usually happy to pay somebody.

Bump is anyone familiar with plumbing material costs? I am being told by my plumber that his costs have doubled since January.
