Sitting idle for four years. I let it use up all the gas last time. Started on first pull. Holy cow! Hopefully my AC window unit still works.

Same thing happened to me!
I was dreading getting it to start but I got lucky.

You're damn lucky.

During Last years hurricane my buddy dropped my off a light plant and I spent all day trying to get it going. Just yon yon yon yon yon sputter yon yon yon. finally got it started around 4 that afternoon. Was too tired to move it so i just ran some pipe out the window for the exhaust.

Mine however won't start.

I can spray a shot of starter fluid and it'll ignite and turnover. I can pull the drain on the carb and gas pours out. Just seems like it won't run on the gas in the tank. It had some old gas in it. I've drained it and put new gas in. Still won't crank.

Any thoughts?

carb jets are fouled. get some tiny cleaning brushes or wire and take it apart. Or buy a chinese carb. I'd try the former first since the chinese carbs can work but are really cheaply made.

FYI - If you only use non ethanol gas and completely drain the gas tank, your chances of the generator starting after a long layoff are very good.

TigerKurt - I know it's probably not a necessary but I only use non ethanol gas in all my small engines. The extra few pennies are worth it

3 years ago I ran mine empty with trufuel and then drained the carb bowl also. Today I poured some gas in and it started right away like it was brand new.

During a move I used my generators, 2 small 2200 inverter type with trufuel. Move got hectic and I forgot to run empty or drain. Left trufuel in them for 2 years, I just knew after all was said and done with I'd be cleaning carbs and all that so I just pushed it off.

Random storm kills power at the house, ah what the hell let's see if they start. Both of them start third/fourth pull after 2 years of sitting with trufuel.

100% carb jet. What I do is strip a wire then remove two single copper threads from the wire and run it through the jet hole. Spray carb cleaner in the jet. I'll bet when you take carb apart you'll see the jet clogged. .. I know some people are intimidated by carb repair but this isn't some holley 4 barrel or an outboard quad carb set up. This is a simple carb to clean and even rebuild. Though even still if one didn't want to rebuild it you can get a new carb from Amazon for like $25.
Plenty of videos on YouTube explaining what to do to clean the carburetor

Try to keep it running for a minute or so with just a shot of starter fluid every few seconds. It might suck whatever little piece of trash is clogging the jet.

Carburetor removal denial syndrome. Curable by 6 pack of beer.

Suck it up and do it. It'll be quicker than jacking with all the snake oil.

Agreed. I’m just giving him a quick option before going thru pulling the carb. This worked on our riding mower at the camp last weekend when we were in a hurry.
